1. He has max sails +70 on both H and V and you're BTC is not fully moded
2. He's very good at sailing (head and tail winds).
3. Might be using those NC sails +26+30-1 while you're using a cheap one
4. Might be using speed boost (+30% or +50%)
5. If you have an aide ship and its slow then it your main ship will be affected while he's aide ship is somewhat fast.

fully improved, lowest cargo corvette with few provitions can be VERY fast, and BTC max cargo sometimes isnt very fast, specially fully loaded and bad winds. Corvettes, frigates, xebec cruiser/frigate are very fast ships, and sometimes can run faster than most trade clippers.
