But shot defense takes up a slot and normal shot & flame shot & double-shot are arguably the most useful (esp. normal shot which he does not have).

Someone said that gErome is better than Siegfried, but didnt said why. Siegfried have 3 defensive skills (double shot is one of these), and ballistic/penetration, Gerome 3 offensive skills and accuracy/reloading. Both are for diferent playstyles, but normally that "situational" need of a defense is more important tan offensive skills, and most of the times penetration is more useful tan reloading.
And, about the other skills, while mineral trade helps "Hamburg" casting, firearms helps "Barcelona" casting (but there are much better casting aides)

I disagree with this "need of a defense is more important tan offensive skills". Pirates are offensive otherwise whats the use of being a pirate? In my opinion top maritimers in GAMA are pirates so offensive > defensive skill.
