      No.4848

      Edit
A Sea of Ice and Mist
      No Expiration
      Lisbon Adventurer's Guild
I hear that you have investigated the dangers to navigation in the seas to the north of the new continent. What was it called? The strait of Belle Isle. Our Scholar here would like to do a further investigation into the place. It's a dangerous place, so we can only ask someone of your skill and experience. Good Luck.

                          1. The Reason for the Rough Environment
I have read your report on the strait of Belle Isle. I find myself interested in that strait. The current is strong and the narrow strait is littered with ice. In particular, I believe the occasional mist to be of great concern. I am trying to find the reason behind these phenomena. And to do that...

                          2. The Archives of London
I would like you to go to London. The scholar there is said to have a number of books on the northern seas. After you read those, I want you to go and investigate the place. It will be a dangerous voyage, but I believe you and your crew can return safely from it.

                          3. A Difficult Research Report
I would say that the problems with the strait of Belle Isle are caused by the currents. I do believe I have a book on the current of the northern Atlantic. Well, it is not as complete as you might want, but I'm sure it will be of aid to someone with your knowledge of geography.

                          4. Considering the Currents
The warm climate of the land we live in is maintained by the warm currents of the western seas. In other words, the west wind blows along the top of this warm current, bringing us warmth. I believe this type of phenomena occurs across the globe.

                          5. Effects on the Climate
So what do you think? It appears the currents and the winds work together to affect the climate of the areas they pass through. You appear to believe that the strong current, the appearance of mist, and the ice are linked. But if you assume that the problem is the local currents, then everything ties together.

                          6. The Hypothesis of the Scholar
Suppose there was a really strong, cold current. When such a current enters a warm location, it cools the air causing fog. And if that current is also carrying ice along with it, it would result in a place such as the one you discovered. Don't you think?

                          7. North to South Current
Considering the location of the Strait of Belle Isle, I believe the current is flowing from north to south. Based solely on the information I have gathered from voyagers like yourselves, if you go far enough to the north if the Carribean, you reach a spot where you cannot advance because of the ice. If there is a current flowing through there, then our hypothesis can be proven true.

                          8. Proving the Hypothesis
We believe that the cause of the inhospitable conditions of the strait of Belle Isle is caused by a strong current flowing down from the north. If we can prove this, we can explain the difficulties for sailing in that area. Now we must make our preparations. We will investigate the seas north of the island in the bay north of Nassau.

A cold current flowing south from the southwest coast of Greenland to the northeastern coast of North America. With thick fogs and icebergs floating down from Greenland as the heat rises in spring, sailing in these seas can be dangerous.
