In order to avoid danger
You must know, of course, that the island of Madagascar is to the east of the continent. We will pass to the east of that island if we are to take the shortest route to Calicut. So if we know the location of the island's southern tip, navigation would be a good deal easier. Perhaps the town official would know a little more.

Beach with giant creatures
The southern coasts of Madagascar are covered in dunes, and there is supposedly a giant creature living there. ...But I suppose that doesn't help a great deal. Just pay attention to your compass and move your ship along the edge of the island. You should be able to find the southern tip that way.
