- Shipyard Master
You must be the student from the school here for the lecture.
- 8804
- Shipyard Master
You've got visitors, Instructor. Take care of 'em.
- 8805
- Instructor Matthias
This is a great ship bottom...It's got a very straight grain for cedar...
I can see this cutting through the waves like a knife...
- 8806
- Shipyard Master
Heeey! Instructor!
- 8807
- Instructor Matthias
Whoops...
- 8808
- Instructor Matthias
Sorry about that. I always get caught up when I see a battleship being constructed.
- 8809
- Shipyard Master
Ha ha ha. Instructor, this is a ship for sailors.
- 8810
- Instructor Matthias
You may be a student, but you are a man of the sea with his own boat.
I hope you'll hold at least some affection for your craft.
Anyway, you can't love a ship if you don't know anything about them.
Likewise, if you don't know yourself well your ship will never feel at ease with you either...
- 8811
- Instructor Matthias
So, today we're going to learn about basic ship knowledge.
The first and most basic thing may be the most important knowledge you'll need as a sailor, so listen up.
- 8813
- No one loves boats more than me
- 8814
- Boats are just tools to be used
- 8815
- Instructor Matthias
Oh ho, is that right...
Well, I hope you'll love them even more after taking this lecture.
- 8816
- Instructor Matthias
Hey now, the ships won't like you if you say things like that.
A ship is a sailor's partner and best friend. They can save you or kill you.
- 8817
- Instructor Matthias
Listen. This is just an allegory, but...
A good swordsfighter knows the length and width of his weapon intimately.
Of course, that's partly because he's used to it, but it's also because he studied it.
Then, once he adds his own skill to it, he becomes a first-class swordsfighter who can stare down death and win.
- 8818
- Instructor Matthias
It's the same with sailors. Each ship has its own size, uses different hardwares, has different turning speeds and different ways of catching the wind.
Until you know all of those for your own ship perfectly, you can't call yourself a true sailor.
No matter how good you may be at reading the weather, or how good you are at steering the rudder,
your abilities will be halved if you don't know your ships.
Anyway, I'm only going to teach you the most rudimentary basics today, so be sure to get them down before you go home.
- 8819
- Instructor Matthias
First, check out the information for your own ship.
While you do that, I'm going to take another look at that battleship...
- 8820
- Instructor Matthias
Old man, look after this kid while I go stare at that ship, will you?
- 8821
- Shipyard Master
All right, if you say so.
- 8822
- Shipyard Master
Go on and check your ship's information, then talk to me again.
- 8823
- Click the Ship button on the top right of the screen,
then choose Ship Info from the menu.
- 8824
- Once the Ship Information screen is open,
look over each of the items,
such as "Base Performance" displayed on the right side.
- 8825
- Place the cursor over the numbers
to see an explanation of what they mean.
- 8826
- Shipyard Master
All finished?
- 8827
- Shipyard Master
Okay, then let's...
- 8828
- Shipyard Master
Hey, teacher, your student's waiting for you.
- 8829
- Shipyard Master
...
...
- 8830
- Shipyard Master
It's no use. He's completely gone.
- 8831
- Shipyard Master
Well, I guess it can't be helped. I'll be doing the teaching for a while.
Fortunately, the workers are working on their own jobs now,
so first, let's talk about a ship's Base Performance.

The fore-and-aft rig is used to propel the ship by keeping it parallel with the direction you want to move in.
It's strong against headwinds and very flexible, but it is not good at capturing the wind and lacks propulsion power.
The higher this property is, the faster you can go under a headwind, but your speed under fair winds will drop.
- 8843
- Shipyard Master
What do you want to ask about next?
- 8844
- Shipyard Master
The square rig is used to capture as much of a fair wind as possible.
It can propel a ship forward perpendicularly to the wind it uses.
It's great for capturing fair winds, but is terrible against headwinds.
The higher this property is, the faster you will go under fair winds, but your speed under headwinds will drop.
- 8845
- Shipyard Master
Rowing power is the power used to row oars. Oars are used on galleys.
The higher the ship's Rowing Power, the more effective the Battle Skill "Rowing Skill" is.
- 8846
- Shipyard Master
Turning speed affects how easily a ship can turn.
Large ships and ships with powerful studding sails tend to have slow turning power and low acceleration. If you want to enhance your ship's sails with studding sails,
the main thing to watch out for is to try and keep its turning power.
- 8847
- Shipyard Master
Wave resistance affects how your ship handles large waves.
Galleys and small ships have shallow drafts, or parts that don't sink far below the water's surface.
This leads to an unstable ship that is easily tossed about by waves.
The ocean here is an inland sea, which means the waves are gentle and the wind is weak, so you don't have to worry about low wave resistance here.
But when you head out into the open seas, that lack of resistance will cause your speed to drop, and large waves have the possibility of carrying off your crew.
- 8848
- Shipyard Master
Armouring is the fundamental Defence of a ship.
A military ship, such as a Galleon, that has been rebuilt as a merchant vessel has thick armour.
If you have even the slightest inclination to do battle with pirates, you should pick a ship with high Armouring.
- 8849
- Shipyard Master
Have you heard enough?
- 8850
- How will you respond?
- 8853
- Shipyard Master
All right, let's take a break. It's okay to leave the teacher alone, as I can teach you.
If you want to hear the rest, go ahead and ask me.
- 8854
- Shipyard Master
Okay, so let's continue on and leave the teacher out of this.
Both a ship hold and crew are important so make sure you remember both.
So what would you like to ask?
- 8855
- What question do you want to ask?
- 8856
- Information about the ship hold.
- 8857
- Details about sailors.
- 8859
- Shipyard Master
What would you like to know about a ship hold?
- 8860
- What question do you want to ask?
- 8864
- About something else.
- 8865

The cabins are the rooms for the sailors. The bigger they are, the more sailors can be put on board.
A galley has had its space to store cargo removed and cabins put in their place.
To prepare for unforeseen disasters, you should put many sailors on board.
- 8872
- Shipyard Master
Do you want to know more about ship holds?
- 8873
- What will you answer?
- 8875
- Ask about something else.
- 8876
- Shipyard Master
The cannon room is a room to store the big cannons.
The number of ports for cannons that you can put on board a ship cannot exceed the total number of cannon rooms.
When choosing cannons, it is crucial to match the number of cannons to your ship.
- 8877
- Shipyard Master
The ship's hold is a space where you can store Trade Goods and Supplies. You can only load 15 types of Water, Food, Timber, and Munitions.
- 8878
- Shipyard Master
Fatigue is how tired your Sailors are. No matter how tough the man, there is a limit to how Fatigued they can become before they collapse.
When your Sailors begin to show signs of Fatigue, you should feed them food.
- 8879
- Shipyard Master
Do you want to know more about Sailors?
- 8880
- What will you answer?
- 8882
- Ask about something else.
- 8883
- Shipyard Master
Proficiency is the level of training sailors have.
For Sailors with high Proficiency, there is no wasted effort and they do not become Fatigued easily.
On the flip side, Sailors with low Proficiency will tire easily and become homesick.
Even sailors still wet behind the ears will become toughened up by the ocean.
- 8884
- Shipyard Master
Loyalty is how your sailors feel about you.
If Loyalty is low, they will pilfer your Trade Goods in the hold
mutiny, and cause terrible things to befall you.
You should treat your Sailors well by treating them to a night out in the Pub sometimes.
- 8885
- Shipyard Master
Have you heard enough?
- 8886
- How will you respond?
- 8889
- Shipyard Master
I won't teach you things that can be put into words.
I'm a little tired, give a break.
The teacher... If there's something else he doesn't know, I'll teach you.
If you want to hear the rest, come ask me.
- 8890
- Shipyard Master
...That teacher still isn't back yet, huh?
- 8891
- Instructor Matthias
Sorry about that, I got caught up in checking out that new Galleon...
So how far did we get?
- 8892
- Shipyard Master
....
I already went over mostly everything.
- 8893
- Instructor Matthias
You did?! My apologies... I suppose today's lecture ends here then...
- 8894
- Shipyard Master
Wait a second, there's still more to be taught.
I only talked about the Base Performance of ships. You should talk about one topic...
- 8895
- Instructor Matthias
That...?
But isn't it to soon for Player?
- 8896
- Shipyard Master
No harm done in learning about it.
- 8897
- Shipyard Master
Have you managed to get your hands on a new ship up until now?
- 8898
- What will you answer?
- 8901
- Shipyard Master
Is that so? So you're attached to the ship you've got now.
In the future when you want a new ship, it's normal to buy it at a Shipyard.
- 8902
- Shipyard Master
So how did you come by this ship?
- 8903
- What will you answer?
- 8904
- I bought it at a Shipyard.
- 8905
- I bought it from an acquaintance.
- 8906
- Shipyard Master
Yeah, that's how it would usually go.
You ordered it off of a list of ships that the Shipyard had, right?
- 8907
- Shipyard Master
Is that so? Must have been a good acquaintance.
You'll have to repay that debt someday.
- 8908
- Shipyard Master
The ships that are sold at a Shipyard are of average characteristics. Increasing the capacity of a ready-made ship for trading, changing from lumber to steel for usage in battle...
In order to fulfil these wishes, a certain skill is necessary when building the ships.
- 8909
- Instructor Matthias
That is the "Shipbuilding Skill." You can have a say in ships that the Masters build.
If you have this Skill, they will see that you have this knowledge and will listen to your order.
- 8910
- If you have the "Shipbuilding Skill"
and talk to a Shipyard Master,
then the "Build New Command" will be displayed.
- 8911
- If you execute the "Build New Command",
then the ship built in that town will be built
to your specifications.
- 8912
- Shipyard Master
But when you order a ship it's not like you will receive it right away.
You'll have to pass the time by repeatedly engaging in trading or defeating pirates.
A completed ship can be picked up at any Shipyard.
- 8913
- Instructor Matthias
If your Shipbuilding Skill has improved to a certain extent at the Shipwright,
but is still not advanced enough or untrained, then the only rebuilding that can be done is to change how the sails are hung...
If the skill has matured, then the number of cannon rooms and cabins can be adjusted and the hold's capacity can be changed.
- 8914
- Shipyard Master
For now, a ready-made ship is certainly enough,
but if you are aiming to become a Sailor who travels the whole world
then someday you will have to look into ordering a special ship just for your own usage.
- 8915
- What will you answer?
- 8916
- I want to someday sail in my own ship.
- 8917
- Master can you make it for me?
- 8918
- Shipyard Master
I'll be waiting anxiously for that day to come.
- 8919
- Instructor Matthias
All right, so it's about time to put an end to this lecture.
Someday Player, too, will be able to liven up a conversation with a drink on a Galleon.
See you later.
- 8920
- Shipyard Master
Well that was a bizarre example
...But the Instructor made his love for ships clear.
- 8921
- Shipyard Master
So in the end, it ended up being something like a lecture from me.
But someday I'll be able to puff out my chest and proudly say that I taught you the basics of ships.
Back to work for me, good luck!
