It's you, Player!
Have you seen our young lady?
Her appointment is minutes away, where has she gone...
- 341
- Emaretta
Where has our young lady gone? Her appointment is minutes away...
- 342
- Painter
Where did Harun take the princess?
- 343
- Port Official
I have told you many times already.
The Orseolo ship must not leave port, under any circumstance.
- 344
- Vittoria
.....
Be honest with me.
Who ordered that?
- 345
- Port Official
....um....
- 346
- Vittoria
Your silence says...
my brother?
- 347
- Port Official
Well....
Um....
- 348
- Vittoria
...
Why hello, Player
I am pleased to see you.
- 349
- Harun
You've come at a good time.
Come here for a second...
- 350
- Harun
Master Alvise is cruel! He's trying to force Vittoria to marry.
- 351
- Vittoria
It's nothing new.
My brother always says this...
- 352
- Alvise
Grow up, and stop collecting trash.
You are the daughter of a noble.
Your duty and destiny is to find a happy marriage with a powerful noble to solidify the family's standing.
- 353
- Vittoria
Oh brother...
- 354
- Harun
Today, she was supposed to go visit one of her suitors, but instead, she decided to run off to visit some ruins.
- 355
- How will you respond?
- 357
- Are you sure that you want to do that?
- 358
- Vittoria
It's alright...
As long as I can get my brother to some day realise the value of my cultural activities.
He will understand that a noble's daughter can do much more than just marry.
- 359
- Harun
Forget that! Let's talk about my big scoop--the ruins at Naples.
- 360
- Vittoria
Yeah...
- 361
- Harun
Well, I got a hold of a big scoop.
- 362
- Vittoria
Apparently, ruins from the Roman era have been found near Naples.
If I remember correctly, that area is where a town called Pompeii used to be, until it was buried by a volcano.
If these ruins are from that town, it's a great discovery.
- 363
- Harun
So I ended up taking her outside of the mansion.
So, Player, can you come out to the ruins with us?
We could use a ride to Naples, and the roads there are full of bandits.
- 364
- Vittoria
What? That would be too much to ask of Player.
- 365
- Harun
Well Vittoria, you can stay here and meet your suitor.
- 366
- Vittoria
Well...
I guess...
I'm sorry, Player.
Can I ask you for this favour? Your efforts will be compensated, of course.
- 367
- What do you want to do?
- 370
- Vittoria
Thank you...
- 371
- Harun
Well then! Off to Naples we go!
- 372
- Harun
What a cheapskate.
- 373
- Vittoria
Stop, Harun! You shouldn't say that.
- 374
- Vittoria
Player, could you come to Naples with us? I will pay for your efforts, of course.
- 375
- Harun
Come on, Player.
Let's go!
- 376
- Vittoria
Are we at Naples already?
- 377
- Harun
Wow! Player, your ship is faster than the merchant ships out there.
- 378
- Vittoria
There should be a gate to the outskirts of this town somewhere.
- 379
- Harun
I can guide you once we get outside the gates.
I bought a map, so there's no problem.
- 380
- Harun
The ruins are to the east from here, past the large dead tree.
- 381
- Vittoria
We would have to find this dead tree first, then.
- 382
- Harun
Is this it?
- 383
- Excavator
Judging from the ruins' shape, there should be another statue of a god nearby...
- 384
- Excavator
The Diana statue, eh...
Where could it be...
- 385
- Excavator
Hmm.
I'm sure it's around here somewhere...
- 386
- Vittoria
Looks like the excavation party is here as well.
- 387
- Young Man
The statue of Diana, which pairs with the statue of Apollo, should be somewhere in this ruin of a temple.
The sun is still high, we must find it.
- 388
- Vittoria
Is that the leader of the excavation party? He seems young for a scholar.
- 389
- Harun
...
Look! There's a marble statue sticking its head out, over there.
- 390
- Vittoria
...
That's the statue of Apollo, the sun god.
Seems mid-Roman...
Then, is this really Pompeii!?/f Incredible!
- 392
- Young Man
A visitor? Here? How rare.
Are you here for these Roman ruins as well?
- 393
- Vittoria
...What?
Oh, yes, we have been told that there is a Roman city buried here...
- 394
- Voice
A guest, Julien?
- 395
- Julien
...
Ah! Countess!
It is great to have our sponsor come see us at the site.
- 396
- Countess
I'm tired of seeing Naples' scenery.
Are you still not done with your shrine excavation?
- 397
- Julien
...I'm afraid not...
- 398
- Countess
...Oh ho.
Is that...
- 399
- Countess
That statue is just the right size for our garden.
I permit you to place it in my carriage.
Excavate it immediately.
- 400
- Vittoria
Hold it!
- 401
- Vittoria
What do you mean to dig up just the statue when we still can't see the entire shrine yet?
- 402
- Countess
And who are you, girl, to tell me what I can or cannot do?
- 403
- Vittoria
If you're willing to fund an archaeological dig, then you must know this.
Until an investigation is finished, you can't remove a single part of the ruins, or the image of what it used to look like will be lost forever.
And if that statue is the primary statue in the temple, that goes twice as much.
Not even the King himself can be allowed to steal from a site like this.
I will not let it happen.
- 404
- Countess
How rude! How dare you call me a thief!
- 405
- Julien
Please, be calm, Madame Countess.
It is just a simple, worthless statue.
It is not fit to be presented in a beautiful garden such as yours.
Please...take a look at this instead.
- 406
- Countess
Oh ho...
And this is...
- 407
- Julien
This is a goldwork necklace we dug up from these ruins.
I believe it would be a perfect match for your lovely white neck.
- 408
- Vittoria
......!?
- 409
- Countess
Beautiful! Just what I would expect from Julien Clarence.
- 410
- Julien
Thank you very much, my lady.
...
The excavation is mostly complete.
We shall return to France now.
- 411
- Julien
Well then, let us excuse ourselves.
I wish to see you again, wise and beautiful moon goddess Diana.
- 412
- Vittoria
...!
- 413
- Vittoria
Who...
who was that?
- 414
- Harun
Wow, did you see that necklace? Are there more of those treasures in these ruins?
- 415
- Vittoria
It's a lie, that they found it here.
I saw the Romanesque engravings, but it's a modern replica.
- 416
- Harun
Eww...
so that gold-laden old woman got tricked by that stuck-up guy!
- 417
- Vittoria
I suppose...
That man Julien might be a Pavo.
- 418
- How will you respond?
- 421
- Harun
Hey, Player, Vittoria, what's a Pavo?
- 422
- Vittoria
Pavo is another word for a peacock.
A peacock's wings are beautiful, but don't allow the bird to fly.
A Pavo is a person who sells beautiful-looking but actually worthless items to their sponsors.
- 423
- Harun
So that would make him an enemy of Vittoria.
- 424
- Vittoria
I suppose...
But he did end up protecting that statue of Apollo, which we should be thankful for.
Besides, he resembles someone...
- 425
- How will you respond?
- 428
- Harun
What's wrong?
- 429
- Vittoria
No, nothing.
Well, now that we found the ruins, let's head home.
Player, thank you for taking me to this great ruin.
Here is a token of my gratitude.
- 430
- Woman's voice
My lady!
- 431
- Vittoria
What!?
- 432
- Vittoria
Oh...
it's you, Emaretta.
What are you doing here?
- 433
- Emaretta
You should know, my lady.
Your marriage has been called off.
- 434
- Vittoria
Oh! Really!?
- 435
- Emaretta
You look much too happy...
Master Alvise was at a loss for words.
- 436
- Vittoria
...
I have my reasons...
- 437
- Emaretta
And I shall hear them on the ship.
Come on, to the ship, my lady!
- 438
- Vittoria
...Yes, Alvise.
- 439
- Emaretta
Player, thank you again for protecting our lady.
However, in the future, please refrain from taking her from her home without permission.
- 23015
- Several days later, Player came across Vittoria and Harun caught in a dispute with a port official.
- 23016
- The two spoke about their circumstances.
It all started when Alvise, who hoped to strengthen his foothold in the parliament, devised a scheme to marry Vittoria to a powerful nobleman.
Unwilling to accept her brother's one-sided plans for her, Vittoria followed Harun's advice and fled the mansion.
She then decided to go and visit some ruins from the Roman Era that lay on the outskirts of Naples.
However, Alvise had already made arrangements at the port and prevented them from taking the Orseolo family boat.
So, the two of them asked Player to take them to the ruins in Naples.
- 23017
- Once arriving in Naples, Player and the others immediately headed for the outskirts of town.
- 23018
- According to Harun's map, a large dead tree to the east of town would point them in the direction of the ruins.
- 23019
- Having finally arrived at the ruins, the Statue of the Sun God Apollo had already been dug up by the excavation team.
The young man in charge of the excavation ordered his men to find the pair to the Statue of Apollo, the Statue of the Moon Goddess Diana.
Vittoria let out a cry of joy when she found that the rumours about these ruins being the Roman city of Pompeii were true.
- 23020
- Noticing the group, a young man called out to them.
Just then, a lone carriage approached and out stepped a beautiful young woman people were addressing as "Countess".
Julien, the young man in charge of this excavation, seemed to attend to her every need.
Seeing the Statue of Apollo, the Countess gave the order that it be dug up and put in the carriage so that she could display it in her garden.
However, Vittoria took her to task for what amounted to an illegal excavation.
The Countess was angered at being called a thief, but Julien came to intervene.
He presented her with an extravagant gold necklace which he claimed he had unearthed in the ruins, but in actuality was a worthless trinket.
The Countess's mood improved immediately and as she was leaving, Julien explained to Vittoria, "I wish to see you again, wise and beautiful moon goddess Diana."
- 23021
- After the coach had gone, Vittoria suspected that Julien was a Pavo, namely, someone who takes something that is worthless and tries to sell it to people who deal in art in order to cheat them out of their money.
The reason she gave was because the necklace that he sold to the woman was not a rare artefact, but a mere cheap imitation.
However, he had also lied to her in order to protect the Statue of Apollo, which was a fact she could not ignore.
Though confused by Julien's contradictory behaviour, Vittoria thanked Player for bringing her to the ruins and then set out to return to Naples.
- 23022
- Back in town, her attendant Emaretta was waiting for them with a message from Alvise.
She informed them that the marriage had been called off, to which she could only stare in amazement as a large smile came to Vittoria's face.
Vittoria boarded the Orseolo family boat and was taken back to Venice.
