The job was to escort an official who was to oversee the development of a base along the shipping lanes passing Africa's southernmost point of the Cape of Good Hope.

He had participated in the construction of the Royal Company House, which was a large trading company under the direct control of the royal family.
The construction site was a place where Diego Sarmiento had set up a trading company when he was young.
He had presented this reminder of his youth to the King.
The official laughed at Diego--who was driven by nostalgia to raise money and rebuild the trading company--and then boarded a ship.
