1. A very popular god
Of course I know, it's Ganesh. The immensely popular god of trade and scholarship. Also protector of doorways. Ganesh is said to be the son of Shiva and Parvati. I don't know why he has the head of an elephant. Best ask a priest.？

2. Shiva rested his head
One theory has it that Parvati blew life into a doll and used him to stand guard. When her husband Shiva returned and was refused passage, he struck off Ganesh's head. Shiva appeased his grief-stricken wife by replacing Ganesh's head with that of a passing elephant.
