Look, the lecture's almost about to begin.
There's the Advanced Commerce Course teacher now, Instructor Mutu.
Have you gotten used to him yet?

      • Instructor Mutu
        Heeeeeello there!
I'm so happy I'll get to teach you again, Player! You're such a quick learner, after all.
Although, this lecture might be a little difficult. Are you sure you can keep up?
        • 10258
        • What will you answer?
          • 10259
          • Absolutely.
            • 10260
            • Is it really that difficult?
              • 10261
              • Instructor Mutu
Good answer! I like that confidence. Now I can teach at my full capacity.
There weren't many students like that even in India.
I never would have thought I'd found the type of student I was looking for here in Europe... How interesting.

Huh? Did I scare you? Don't worry, you'll be fine. I'm sure you'll have no problem with it, Player.

Today's lecture is about investments. It may not be something that's familiar to most Voyagers,
so I'll try to explain it at a pace that works for you. What would you like to know?

                            • That's enough.

Investments are the act of donating money to a city. By doing so, you can help that city to develop and grow.
In exchange for the investment, the city will give you a precious recipe or lot,
or sell you a trade item that they never had before.
Almost all of the advanced merchants make prior investments like this!

Investments can be made by talking to city officials or the minister of state.
But, they will only deal with Voyagers that have already made something of a name for themselves.
When I was still young, no one recognized me as a Voyager, so I was turned away dozens of times...

You can't invest in foreign countries. The only cities you can invest in must be part of your own country, your country's territory, or neutral harbours.
Neutral harbours serve as harbours for allied countries with the greatest amounts of influence, and are treated as part of those countries' territory.
This is why each country fights over who gets to invest in these harbours and compete for influence.
                                      • 10273
                                      • There are three types of cities
                                        headquarters, territory, and neutral harbours.
You can only invest in cities that are part of
your own country's headquarters, territory, or
neutral harbours. You cannot invest in
headquarters or territories of other countries.

The effects investing has on a city, eh.
When you invest in a city, that city's Development Level increases. In addition, the country of the person who invested increases in influence.
In particular, neutral harbours are treated the same as countries with the highest possible levels of influence, and excel in areas such as tariffs.
After all, you can't ignore tariffs when dealing with high-cost trade items.
Every country's merchants invest lots of money in neutral harbours to try and turn them into harbours allied with their own countries.
But if you're going to try and turn another country's allied harbour to your own country, you're going to need a lot of financial power just to begin to compete.
Essentially, the whole country needs to come together and plan out how they're going to try and accomplish this.
                                                                      • 10289

And, when the amount you've invested reaches a certain level, you will see changes such as the markets, item shops, and craft shops improving their inventories.

But, if you use an item called a Request Investment Book, you can get around this limitation and invest in the same city consecutively.

When taking part in one of these battles, you will be unable to use Request Investments Books when investing in the target harbour.
