When you think of a merchant it seems as though you think of "someone who trades".
Well then, let me start there.
That so called "trading" involves buying some trade goods sold at the Market of one town and then going to sell them for a higher price at the Market of another town.
For example, say you buy some fish in Town A and then you sell that fish in Town B.
In this case if Town B does not normally sell fish then the demand for fish would be high there and you can sell it for a higher price.
On the other hand, if fish is already sold in Town B then the demand will be low and you won't be able to fetch a very high price for it.
                            Now, quiz time.
The trade goods sold in Town A are fish, chicken, and eggs.
The trade goods sold in Town B are chicken, wine, and fish.
Which trade goods should you carry with you if you are going from Town A to Town B?

Fish and chicken are handled in B town, so you can won't be able to sell for a good price.
The correct answer here is eggs.
Also, if you trade between A town and B town and stock up on Trade Goods, then you can decrease the cost of the ocean crossing.
That's because if you get 100 boxes of eggs, split it and carry it in two trips, then it will cost you double the ocean crossing fees.
If you acquire the Trading Skill, then you can carry lots all at once and cut down on the miscellaneous fees.

You will someday become a Sailor who will travel all over the world.
When that happens, I think you will realize that Trade Goods have the flavour of their locales.
For example, Whiskey in the British Isles, Holland Calico in The Netherlands, or Parchment from the Balkan Peninsula.
These are "Noted Goods" and are highly valued in other regions and can be sold for high prices.
There are many different types of noted goods and if you buy them wholesale, you can sell them for extra.
This is an important point, so please remember it.

Now I want to tell you about another type of merchant, one who makes and sells items.
                                          Creating items is called "production".
To produce items you'll need different production skills, raw ingredients, and recipe books.
The five production skills you can learn are Cooking, Handicraft, Casting, Sewing, and Storage.
Raw ingredients are basically any item used in production, including trade goods and consumable items.
Recipes are written documents that describe how to produce various items.
When you gather all the items required you can create, or "produce", a new item from these raw ingredients.
You can then take the items you've produced and sell them to other sailors in the Bazaar, or sell them directly at the Market or at the Item Shop for profit.
Of course, gathering raw ingredients requires a bit of capital and some raw ingredients can only be obtained outside of the Market so that makes this job a little more difficult than others perhaps.
But, I definitely think you should try it sometime.
It may require a little extra work but the potential profit is also very great. Plus, by making things you can really experience your contributions to the world first-hand.
