- In the southern European port city of Marseilles, during a peaceful, cheerful afternoon just like any other, an incident was brewing...
- 136
- Youth
...No, I don't know any man like that.
- 137
- Merchant
...Neither do I.
- 138
- Man
I suppose I can...
- 139
- Man
...Hey, you.
You're a Voyager here, right? Can I talk to you for a bit?
...I'm looking for a certain man who's hiding out in this city.
He's a member of the Huguenot extremists, and his name is...
- 140
- Man
Ug...
What's...going on! C-can't move...my hand...
Gack...!
- 141
- Resident
I can't believe this guy's sleeping here in the middle of the day...
- 142
- Resident
...H-hey! He's dead!
- 144
- Patrol Leader
What's going on!?
- 145
- Patrol Leader
...A murder!
Are there any witnesses?
- 146
- Resident
...Y-yes.
He just collapsed all of a sudden in front of this sailor!
- 147
- Patrol Leader
Hey, sailor! What did you do to him?
- 148
- How will you respond?
- 152
- Patrol Leader
What...?
...Well, either way, you're coming down to the station.
- 153
- Patrol Leader
What!? ...That's some guts you have, buddy.
You're busted!
- 154
- Voice
It appears that he's been poisoned...
- 155
- Patrol Leader
......!?
- 156
- Young Man
...As you can see, the spots on the victim's face are the proof.
- 157
- Patrol Leader
Hey! You can't come in here without a...!
- 158
- Young Man
...Not only that, the spots are spreading from his hand to his chest.
This means that the poison took effect instantly and was first inflicted on his hand.
...This likely means that he was poisoned from this ring on his right index finger.
- 159
- Patrol Leader
What...!?
- 160
- Young Man
...There.
I knew it.
There's a small poison barb on this ring.
- 162
- Young Man
This Voyager simply had the bad luck to be standing there when the poison went to work.
He has nothing to do with this.
- 163
- Patrol Leader
But, he...
- 164
- Young Man
I don't believe it would reflect well on the police to arrest a man by mistake and later find out the charges were false.
- 166
- Patrol Leader
...Okay! New orders! Send the body to be inspected, and find out where that ring came from!
- 167
- Patrol Guard
Yes, my Lord!
- 168
- Youth
Wow.
I can't believe that stubborn policeman backed down...
- 169
- Merchant
That was an amazingly precise deduction...
- 170
- Resident
Still, I can't believe people are now being poisoned in this city...
- 171
- Young Girl
I'm scared...
I can't believe an incident like that happened out of nowhere...
- 172
- Young Man
It's just your luck getting caught up in an incident like this.
...That said, it's really impressive how you managed to completely keep your calm even though you were almost arrested for murder.
May I ask your name?
- 173
- What do you want to do?
- 175
- My name is not important...
- 176
- Young Man
Ha ha...
No need to be so cautious.
- 177
- Young Man
So, your name is Player.
That's a nice name.
I'm Julien Clarence, a professional treasure hunter.
- 178
- Merchant
Julien Clarence...
Are you the one they used to call the Court Favourite...!?
- 179
- Voice
...Julien.
Why are you involved in this mess when you have a request from a client?
- 180
- Julien
Well well, if it isn't Father Augustine.
There is a poor little lamb that has collapsed here--
- 181
- Augustine
I see...
In that case, I must pray for its soul.
- 182
- Julien
Ha ha...
Okay, let's go back to the client.
- 183
- Julien
...Okay, Player.
We are staying at the church in the city square.
If you ever need us, we will be there and we will be happy to help.
- 184
- Youth
Isn't that dashing...
- 185
- Young Girl
Julien, eh...
That might be nice.
- 186
- Resident
I'm glad you're safe.
...Still, who was that Julien show-off just now?
- 187
- Merchant
You don't know?
They say one day he just went and decided to become a famous treasure hunter in Paris.
- 188
- Resident
...But to be so calm in the face of a dead body means he can't be a regular guy.
- 189
- Merchant
Well, sure.
I mean, he lived through the Court, where murder and conspiracies ran rampant.
I bet anyone would soon get used to dead bodies there.
Ah, it's so scary...
- 190
- Merchant
You should take care to make sure you don't get caught up in anything like this again.
- 24002
- One calm early afternoon, a man was frantically searching for somebody down at the port in Marseilles.
In search of a Huguenot extremist, he suddenly collapsed in front of Player and stopped breathing.
Suddenly, the area was swarming with a mass of people, and the town police were at the scene.
The police captain suspected that Player, the last person to see the man alive, was guilty of murder and moved to make an arrest.
However, a handsome young man made a gallant entrance and pointed out some spots that had appeared on the body that the victim had been poisoned and found what appeared to be the murder weapon, a ring with an attached poison needle.
Completely embarrassed, the police captain ordered his men to search for the owner of the ring and immediately left the scene.
- 24003
- There was a young man who praised the calm and cool nature of Player, who was never affected by even the slightest insult.
The man's name was Julien Clarence.
Known throughout Paris as the "Court Favourite", he was a famous treasure hunter.
- 24004
- Then, a one-eyed monk appeared and asked what all of the commotion was about.
A fascinated smile came to Julien's lips as he answered, "There is a poor little lamb that has collapsed here..." The monk, Augustino, prayed quietly for the departed soul.
Julien told Player that if anything happened, to come to the church in the square where they were staying, and then he left.
- 24005
- As the people gathered there watched him walk away, they whispered amongst themselves that the reason he acted so normal around dead bodies was because he grew up in the Court, which was surrounded by murder and conspiracy on a daily basis.
