His talk of earning Zamorin's trust was nothing but a lie, as he wished to turn the bird in and keep the reward money for himself.
"You're going to help us now!" Sanjai attempted to escape, but Alvero tied him to the mast and went to report the situation to Gama.

Taking the bird as a gift, he praised Sanjai and recommended that he be appointed a licensed merchant along the lines of Mahadi.
Gama was impressed with his enthusiasm and decided to entrust the job to Player and Alvero.

- In high spirits, Alvero went to the port in order to untie Sanjai from the boat.

- Infuriated at being tied up, Sanjai seemed to calm down slightly once Alvero proposed that he recommend him to be a licensed merchant.
Sanjai boasted proudly, "You just concentrate on making the trade happen." Together, the three of them set out for Zamorin's palace.

- With the bird in hand, Sanjai went before Zamorin and talked himself up with the lines rehearsed in the meeting beforehand.
Alvero also did a good job of talking up Sanjai and successfully managed to gain the respect of Zamorin.
However, just as Zamorin was about to confer the status of licensed merchant as a reward, somebody came to interfere.

- It was the licensed merchant, Mahadi.
He requested that things remain the same and that Zamorin allow him to remain as the only licensed merchant.
In response, Sanjai proposed that they have a contest in order to see who would win the right to be the licensed merchant.

- Zamorin was pleased by the suggestion and stated that whoever purchased the most Persian Carpets in 50 days would be declared the winner.

- After leaving the palace, Alvero scolded Sanjai for his recklessness.
However, Sanjai simply smiled and tried in vain to justify his position.
Then, he told Player to go and buy the Persian Carpets.
