Mogadishu...
It isn't an island, but the name is the same.
Let's see what we can learn here...
- 972
- Rest Area Master
...Mogadishu island...? I've never heard of anywhere else that has the same name as our town...
- 973
- Alvero
What about a giant bird called a Rukh, then?
- 974
- Rest Area Master
A Rukh? Yes, a merchant from Sofala did tell me about that, once.
But nothing more than it just being a giant bird, I'm afraid.
- 975
- Alvero
Okay! Next top Sofala.
That's quite a way south from here...
- 976
- Sanjai
What? Another voyage? What a pain!
- 977
- Alvero
(A pain for who?! All you've been doing is sleeping on deck and eating!)
- 978
- Sanjai
Look, I'm worn out.
I'm just gonna take a rest here for a while.
- 979
- Alvero
Finally, Sofala! Let's see what we can learn here.
- 980
- Sanjai
...I'm exhausted today.
I don't know why, I'm delicate, okay? But I can't go outside...
- 981
- Alvero
(...Just ignore him.
Get angry at him every time he does this and we'd never have time to do anything else!)
- 982
- Alvero
Perfect, Player! I've found out where this Mogadishu island is! There's a big island to the east of here which they call Malagasy locally.
Apparently a giant bird lives there!
- 983
- Sanjai
Right then! Prepare to sail, men! Set compasses to the east! To Malagasy island!
- 984
- Alvero
(Gah...
now he takes command!)
- 985
- Sanjai
Phew.
All that hard work! I need a meal.
- 986
- Alvero
Master Sanjai, we have arrived.
This is Malagasy island.
Hey, hold it! What are you doing just standing there?!
- 987
- Sanjai
I guess you've worked out that I'm the brains of this outfit.
Physical labour doesn't suit me.
You go and catch the Rukh--off you go.
I command you!
- 988
- Alvero
(...No problem.
It isn't as though you'd be any use!)
- 989
- Sanjai
Yes? Did you say something?
- 990
- Alvero
Nothing at all! Player, let's split up and search!
- 991
- Sanjai
Quickly, go and catch a Rukh.
I command you!
- 992
- Alvero
Hey, Player.
Look.
There's a massive bird beyond that bush over there!
- 993
- Alvero
...Do you think that is the Rukh?
- 994
- Sanjai
Let me see...?
- 995
- Alvero
...When did you...?
- 996
- Sanjai
Wow, well, it isn't quite the size in the scroll but it certainly is big.
- 997
- Alvero
But it's still just a monster ostrich.
It can't even fly.
Are you sure this thing will do?
- 998
- Sanjai
No problem, no problem.
We're talking about that imbecile Zamorin.
So long as the size fits he'll never see through it.
Well then, Alvero, Player, I'm going back to the ship.
You handle the rest of this.
- 999
- Alvero
Cocky as always.
He won't see through it?! Still, we've come this far, we can only see it to the end now.
We'll just have to bet on that cockiness! Let's bag the bird and get back to Calicut.
- 1001
- Officer
We are trying to get Zamorin to reopen talks about a trade route, but I can't see him agreeing...
- 1002
- Gama
What's happening with Alvero, anyway? I haven't seen him recently.
- 1003
- Sanjai
Now to hand the bird over to Zamorin, collect the reward and start living things up! It was short but fun! Bye-bye!
- 1004
- Sanjai
Alvero, you seem to have caught my sleeve.
- 1005
- Alvero
We were going to all catch this bird together in order to get into Zamorin's good graces, right? So at what point did that change to you getting some reward all to yourself...?
- 1006
- Sanjai
Oh...
is that how this little venture started out?
- 1007
- Alvero
You're joking! You're going to help us now.
Player, get his hands behind his back!
- 1008
- Sanjai
Wah! What are you doing?!
- 1009
- Sanjai
H-Hey...! Why are you tying me to the mast?! Stop it! Don't you know who I am?!
- 1010
- Alvero
Just wait until I've sorted all this out with Admiral Gama.
He'll run away if we give him the chance, or just get in the way and ruin everything.
- 1011
- Sanjai
Untie me! Let me go!
- 1012
- Officer
Alvero! Didn't Admiral Gama order you to be on best behaviour? So where have you and Player been?
- 1013
- Alvero
I'm going to tell you everything, give me a moment.
- 1014
- Alvero
We made friends with a certain trader, you see...
- 1015
- Gama
Very well, I understand.
So what are you planning on doing with the bird?
- 1016
- Alvero
We'll use the bird as leverage to promote Sanjai.
If we can make him a special trader then we won't have to worry about Mahadi to get our pepper!
- 1017
- Gama
I see...
access to a local trader, is it?
- 1018
- Alvero
So I was thinking, would you let me and Player handle Sanjai?
- 1019
- Officer
Hey, Alvero! You're still on your best behaviour! Watch your tongue!
- 1020
- Gama
No, let him talk.
These two are the ones who found the bird, after all.
Let us allow them to handle this.
- 1021
- Alvero
Thank you, Admiral Gama!
- 1022
- Officer
Player, where have you and Alvero been?
- 1023
- Officer
There's nothing I can say after Admiral Gama went so far for you.
But remember that the fate of the entire fleet relies on this mission.
You must succeed, Player, Alvero.
- 1024
- Gama
Player.
It looks like I was right to have you keep an eye on Alvero.
Thank you.
- 1025
- Alvero
What? What are you talking about?
- 1026
- Alvero
Right! This is a once in a lifetime job! Let's get to work, Player!
- 1027
- Gama
I know you can get a good result.
Good luck.
- 1028
- Alvero
Let's go back to the port and free Sanjai.
- 1029
- Sanjai
You thugs! How dare you tie me up here!
- 1030
- Alvero
Calm down, calm down.
Let me explain your role in all this.
- 1031
- Sanjai
What?! You want to help me become a special merchant?!
- 1032
- Alvero
That's right.
If we pull this off you'll be looking at much more than just the reward for the bird!
- 1033
- Sanjai
Special merchant, eh...
A position befitting my prowess, to be sure!
- 1034
- Alvero
That's right, that's right.
Those skills are the very reason we brought this story to you!
- 1035
- Sanjai
It sounds pretty tasty, too.
Just leave this one to Master Sanjai!
- 1036
- Alvero
Let's go to Zamorin's palace!
- 1037
- Sanjai
You got it!
- 1038
- Alvero
(Player, I'm getting pretty good at handling Sanjai, aren't I?)
- 1039
- Guard
Is that...
no?! The bird Lord Zamorin is searching for?!
- 1040
- Alvero
That's right.
And it was I, master merchant Sanjai, who captured it! Allow me to pass!
- 1041
- Guard
Lord Zamorin has given his permission.
You may enter.
- 1042
- Alvero
You remember your lines, Sanjai? You can leave the rest to us, just start things off big, okay? Like a real big fish!
- 1043
- Sanjai
No problem! I am a big fish, after all!
- 1044
- Guard
Lord Zamorin awaits you.
Go on inside.
- 1045
- Zamorin
They are here?! Quickly, show me the bird!
- 1046
- Alvero
Master Sanjai, please go inside.
- 1047
- Sanjai
My dear and most auspicious lord of lords Zamorin! Here is the very bird that you seek!
- 1048
- Zamorin
Ahh! Well done! And who exactly are you...?
- 1049
- Alvero
This is none other than the skilful, noble spice merchant, our master Sanjai!
- 1050
- Sanjai
(...That's right.)
- 1051
- Alvero
The town is alive with rumours of his deeds!
- 1052
- Sanjai
(That's right too!)
- 1053
- Alvero
We Portuguese have been quite captivated by his skills!
- 1054
- Sanjai
(Well done, Alvero!)
- 1055
- Zamorin
...Well, impressive indeed! I would expect no less from one who found the bird.
What can I do for your reward? Money? Land?
- 1056
- Sanjai
Not at all.
I am one who sells spices, and shall always be so.
I wish to do my best to sell spices along with Mahadi, for the sake of Calicut's future.
- 1057
- Zamorin
How selfless! Then I see fit to appoint you as a special merchant, the same as Mahadi, and allow you to deal with the trade of spices here in...
- 1058
- Voice
Wait one moment, please!
- 1059
- Alvero
What...?!
- 1060
- Sanjai
It had to be, didn't it.
Mahadi.
- 1061
- Zamorin
Ah, Mahadi.
Excellent timing.
- 1062
- Mahadi
Do not be fooled, my lord! Buying into the words of this coward will only stain your good name! The only special merchant you need, now and forever, is I!
- 1063
- Sanjai
...Oh dear.
Jealous of me, are you? Afraid of me?
- 1064
- Mahadi
...Dog! How dare you!
- 1065
- Sanjai
Then allow us to do battle for the throne of special merchant! The winner shall rule alone over spice trade in the city!
- 1066
- Alvero
(Hey...
hey, Sanjai! Don't get carried away now!)
- 1067
- Mahadi
...Very well.
I accept your challenge.
- 1068
- Mahadi
To your eventual downfall, I assure you!
- 1069
- Alvero
(Hey! What are you doing to us, Sanjai?!)
- 1070
- Sanjai
(...Don't worry, it will all work out!)
- 1071
- Zamorin
This is all most amusing, I must admit.
Very well.
You shall pit your skills as traders against each other, with the winner becoming the special merchant for the city.
Whoever can bring the most Persian rugs to me within a voyage of 50 days shall be declared the winner.
- 1072
- Zamorin
Whoever can bring the most Persian rugs to me within a voyage of 50 days shall be declared the winner.
- 22079
- According to the scroll that Sanjai held, the legendary Rukh bird lived on Mogadishu Island.
Alvero was filled with trepidation as he read that the Rukh bird was capable of lifting up an entire elephant in its massive claws.
However, Sanjai only laughed.
In search of the island, the group set out towards the city of Mogadishu along the African shore, which shared the same name as the island, in order to look for clues to the island's location.
- 22080
- They learned that a merchant from Sofala was heard talking about the Rukh bird at a tavern in Mogadishu.
However, Sanjai complained about having to go on another long journey, to which Alvero could only sigh at Sanjai's laziness.
- 22081
- After arriving in Sofala, they discovered that the large island to the east of town known as Malagasy seemed to be the Mogadishu Island of legend.
Upon hearing the news, Sanjai issued the order to set sail as if he were the Admiral of the fleet to which Alvero simply shrugged his shoulders in response.
- 22082
- The group arrived at Malagasy Island and Alvero and Player immediately began looking for the bird, while Sanjai just lazily lounged about.
- 22083
- Eventually, the pair spotted a bird through the thicket that appeared to be a Rukh bird.
However, it looked much different than depicted in the scroll, resembling something more of an ostrich.
Suddenly, Sanjai arrived out of nowhere and confidently stated that everything was fine.
He then gave the order to capture the bird and take it back to Calicut.
Alvero, although slightly taken aback by his cheekiness, also seemed to respect him somewhat.
