Welcome to the Maritime Academy, where you will learn how to become a fine sailor.
Some of you may already know a thing or two about sailing, but let's all start with the basics together.
A sailor's ship is his partner, so first, let's go to the shipyard to see how they are made.
Seeing as our lecture has just started,
I will accompany you on your first trip to the shipyard.
- 7528
- Put your cursor over the map on the bottom right
of your screen to see the facilities in each town.
- 7529
- Instructor Alan
You don't have a lesson with me.
- 7530
- Instructor Alan
I need to give you Carpentry Tools for this lesson, but your inventory is full.
Player, please make some room for the tools.
- 7531
- Instructor Alan
This is where the ships you ride on are built.
You will likely soon embark on a journey across these waters, and I'm about to teach you the basics of what you need to know when you do.
Before you depart make sure you check your "Food", "Water", and "Crew".
You can load up "Water" and "Food" by using the "Provision" command. If you're only sailing around this area 10 days worth should be enough.
Also, don't forget to load up "Timber" for repair and "Munitions" for your cannons in case of a pirate attack.
Two barrels of each should be plenty for a small vessel. I'll teach your more about Timber later on.
You can gather up sailors for your crew at the Tavern or at the Port. Hire some if you feel like you need them.
- 7532
- Select the "Provisions" command at port
to resupply Water, Food, Timber, and Munitions.
- 7533
- Select the "Employ Sailors" command
at ports or taverns to hire crew.
- 7534
- When sailing, Provisions and Sailors are displayed
as icons on the top left of your screen.
- 7535
- Instructor Alan
Do you have any questions? If you'd like, I can explain provisions again.
- 7539
- Instructor Alan
All right, let's review.
Before you set sail, check your food, water, and crew.
Near here, where you can restock on water and food, ten days worth should be plenty.
Don't forget to stock up on Timber for repair, as well as Munitions for your cannons in case of pirate attacks.
For small ships, two barrels each should be enough. I'll explain materials in greater detail later.
When you need Sailors, you can hire them in taverns and ports.
- 7540
- Select the "Provisions" command at port
to resupply Water, Food, Timber, and Munitions.
- 7541
- Select the "Employ Sailors" command
at ports or taverns to hire crew.
- 7542

Do you have any questions? If you'd like, I can explain provisions again.
- 7547
- Instructor Alan
Now, for the next subject...
- 7548
- Instructor Alan
You seem particularly preoccupied today. Did something happen?
- 7549
- Shipwright
Oh, hi, Instructor. Nah, but a wrecked ship just came in.
- 7550
- Sailor
We were done in by pirates. Swines! And we almost fought them off.
- 7551
- Instructor Alan
The young have so much energy. You'd do well not to lose your passion, either.
......
Hm? Myself? Ha, I have enough passion for one man.
And need it all to teach you kids! Now, for your next lesson.
- 7552
- Instructor Alan
Just as people have stamina, ships have "Durability".
- 7553
- The red bar displayed next to your ship's icon
represents its Durability.
- 7554
- Instructor Alan
Just like that sailor said, if your ship is attacked by pirates, or runs aground in shallows, it will lose Durability.
- 7555
- Sailor
That's right! No matter how tired you become, you'd better keep the rudder steady.
If you run aground, you could be in for a lot of trouble.
- 7556
- Instructor Alan
Don't worry -- Durability can be recovered. If a person gets injured, there are medicines to help him heal, right?
Well, Timber is like medicine for ships.
- 7557
- Instructor Alan
If your ship is carrying Timber, your crew will gradually repair it as part of their job.
If you have the Repair Skill, you can use those to repair more quickly.
But doing so will consume both Timber and Vigour.
Either way, Timber is crucial for any voyage.
- 7558
- If you have Timber, your ship will automatically
recover Durability as you sail.
- 7559
- Using the Repair Skill will hasten the repair,
but consumes both Timber and Vigour.
- 7560
- Carpentry tools may also be used,
but again both Timber and Vigour will be expended.
- 7561
- Shipwright
Hey, Instructor, don't forget about us!
- 7562
- Instructor Alan
I haven't forgotten you. Shipwrights like this gentleman here will completely repair your ship.
Of course, they will charge based on the amount of repairs.
A good ship relies on a good shipwright.
- 7563
- Talk to a shipwright in town,
and select the "Repair" command to completely restore
your ship's Durability.
- 7564
- Instructor Alan
Do you have any questions? If you'd like, I can explain Durability again.
- 7568
- Instructor Alan
Let's review.
Just like people have health, ships have "Durability".
- 7569
- The red bar displayed next to your ship's icon
represents its Durability.
- 7570
- Instructor Alan
If your ship is attacked by pirates, or runs aground, it will lose Durability.
Timber are required to restore Durability.
If you have Timber, you ship will automatically recover its Durability as you sail.
The Repair Skill may be used to get faster repairs.
Either way, materials are necessary for any voyage.
- 7571
- If you have Timber, your ship will automatically
recover Durability as you sail.
- 7572
- Using the Repair Skill will hasten the repair,
but consumes both Timber and Vigour.
- 7573
- Carpentry tools may also be used,
but again both Timber and Vigour will be expended.
- 7574
- Instructor Alan
Also, shipwrights in the towns can repair your ship completely.
- 7575
- Talk to a shipwright in town,
and select the "Repair" command to completely restore
your ship's Durability.
- 7576
- Instructor Alan
Do you have any questions? If you'd like, I can explain Durability again.
- 7580
- Instructor Alan
Good work. Let's take a break. I'll give you three sets of Carpentry Tools. Don't hesitate to use them in times of danger.
- 7581
- Instructor Alan
Since he's right here, ask the shipwright for repairs. We'll continue your lesson after that.
- 7582
- Instructor Alan
...Player, weren't you supposed to be in my class?
- 7583
- Instructor Alan
Well, Player. Ask the shipwright to repair your ship. We'll continue your lesson after that.
- 7584
- Instructor Alan
Capital. It seems like you understand how repairs work. For your next lesson, I need to give you something called a "Lifesaver".
Player, please make room in your inventory.
- 7585
- Instructor Alan
Capital. It seems like you understand how repairs work.
Now, for your next lesson.
- 7586
- Shipwright
You really got beaten that time.
When things look hopeless, escape is always an option.
- 7587
- Sailor
We almost had them! Those pirates should have been trying to escape from us!
- 7588
- Shipwright
How many times do you need to get shipwrecked before you'll learn.
- 7589
- Sailor
Urk! A-At least one more time, I guess, sir.
- 7590
- Instructor Alan
I'd better teach you about incapacitation and shipwrecking.
- 7591
- Instructor Alan
If your ship's Durability or the remaining number of sailors reaches zero, your ship will be incapacitated -- unable to move.
The Rescue Skill or Lifesavers can restore your mobility.
- 7592
- Instructor Alan
In that case, you should restore its Durability using the Repair Skill, or something similar.
- 7593
- Sailor
That's why you should always have Lifesavers on hand. Just in case, you know?
- 7594
- Instructor Alan
If you are unable to restore your ship from incapacitation, you will be shipwrecked and drift to the nearest town.
But the consequences are great -- you will lose all of your cargo.
- 7595
- Sailor
But people look after the novice sailors.
If an inexperienced sailor becomes incapacitated, a patrol should come to help.
- 7596
- Instructor Alan
But don't get overconfident. Until you are more experienced, avoid risky trips.
- 7597
- Sailor
(Why is he looking at me?)
- 7598
- The Rescue Skill and Lifesavers
can be used to recover from incapacitation.
- 7599
- If you do not have the Rescue Skill or Lifesavers,
you can drift to the nearest town
by selecting the "Shipwreck" Command.
However, you will forfeit much of your current
Gold and Cargo.
- 7600
- If the sum of your Adventure,
Trade, and Battle levels is 20 or below,
a patrol ship will rescue you in case of incapacitation.
- 7601
- Instructor Alan
As I said before, if you lose all your sailors, your ship will be incapacitated.
To sail your ship in safety and comfort, a certain number of sailors are required.
Always have enough sailors to meet the "Required Number of Sailors".
- 7602
- Sailor
Yes, right. Your ship can't move without sailors.
And larger ships require even more sailors.
- 7603
- Each ship has a "Maximum Number of Sailors"
and a "Required Number of Sailors".
If your current number of sailors is less than
the required number, your Sailing Speed will decrease.
- 7604
- Instructor Alan
Do you have any questions? If you'd like, I can explain incapacitation and shipwrecking again.
- 7608
- Instructor Alan
All right, let's review.
If your ship's Durability or remaining number of sailors reaches zero, it will be incapacitated.
Using the Rescue Skill or Lifesavers will restore its mobility.
If you do not have either, you will be shipwrecked and drift to the nearest town. Shipwrecking carries heavy penalties.
However, patrol ships will rescue incapacitated novices.
So don't worry yet.
- 7609
- The Rescue Skill and Lifesavers
can be used to recover from incapacitation.

However, you will forfeit much of your current
Gold and Cargo.

- 7618
- Instructor Alan
You're learning quickly.
- 7619
- Shipwright
Well, the best way is to stay safe and take good care of your ship and your crew.
- 7620
- Instructor Alan
Indeed.
I'll give you these, just in case. But be careful! Sailing a cargo of rum through dangerous waters will make for sunken spirits.
- 7621
- Sailor
(Umm... Was that a joke?)
- 7622
- Instructor Alan
All right, your first lesson is complete. Report back to the academy.
- 7623
- Talk to the school doorkeeper to enter the Maritime Academy.
