Yes, this is useful as the higher your rank, the less likely you are to have the wreck sink back to the ocean floor. WIth this skill, you don't need haul ropes.

Just relog when the rope is about to break, and when you come back its gonna be back to normal?

This skill is most appreciated when you have a wreck out in the middle of the roiling open ocean, you barely move much distance before your rope keeps wanting to break and then you need to stop and wait forever before it resets, without the skill if you get a wreck in the middle of the Atlantic it can take you up to an hour or more to haul the wreck back to merida or azores given the constant stop and go

@nina - no you log back in with the rope in exactly the about to break state as when you logged out. you need to wait about a min for it to reset.

So... is this skill really good to have and rank up, or does a ship w/ hauling assistance negate the need for it entirely? Or is it better in the long run to have both? (I read how using Hauling Assistance = no prof for Haul skill itself, hence my curiosity.)

Hauling assistance yes will negate the need for this skill with Hauling assistance you will never drop a ship ever. prob is not many ships can have it and of the ones that can only a few are ok for raising a ship wreck.So unless you want to build and keep a ship for the sole perpose of haveing Hauling assistance skill. i recomend this skill verry much if you plain to do shipwreck.

Can I grind this skill just by "activate" it and sail around? Or better, activate it then AFK?

This skill is more useful than most players can imagine during shipwreck hauling. It make it more clear I will tell what it does:

1) Prevents losing shipspeed while you're hauling a ship.
2) Decreases the likehood that the hauling rope is about to snap (longer lifespan of the hauling rope)
3) With Hauling Assistance on your ship, you get certain % speed up addition. The amount of that is equal to your Haul rank. So at R20 you would get +20% speed up bonus which can be compared with speed up 1, 2, 3 and 4 combined from oxford.

In short, this skill is handy for Shipwreck seekers even if they've Hauling Assistance on their ship. But like Wenzhi said, the haul proficiency will be negated so it is recommended to grind your haul skill from a different ship till it is sufficient enough for you. :-)

So combined with hauling assistance, would the speed up bonus stack on top of the oxford skill, if one already has the oxford speed up skill equipped?

Yes it stacks with your oxford skill speed up. So that makes the shipskill very useful.

Currently I am testing if the haul rank is equal to the speed up addition when using it together. x)

This skill can fail too, just exactly as hauling ropes do. Sometimes, depending of skill rank or shipwreck rank, the game will tell you to stop for a while to prevent rope from breaking.

you dont need haul skill or haul rope to Hauling assistance to work, if you have Hauling assistance skill on ship, you will never get messaga rope about to break again.
