      Rio de Janeiro Adventurer's Guild
I have a request related to Rapa Nui. The person making the request would like to learn more about folk stories related to Tahiti. If it goes well, you might be able to determine the location of Hawaiki. The town official read your report with great interest... He might remember something important.

                Impressions of report
Ah yes, I read your report. That is quest some legend. Hiva was ravaged by natural disaster and so the people had no choice but to migrate. Then, a seer sees Rapa Nui in his dreams... That island of hope that shines brightly off the sunlight of the rising sun must have been Rapa Nui.

                New land filled with hope
With such a hopeful picture painted for it that must have given them the courage they needed to set sail for a new land. If I was King Hotu Matua I too would most likely have believed the story of the seer and his emissaries when they returned and ordered the migration of all my people. Sorry, I started rambling there.

                Three points
If you think about the legends there are basically three important factors to consider in order to pinpoint the location of Hawaiki and Hiva. First of all, it has to be somewhere where a large natural disaster occurred. Second is that it be an archipelago. The third point is that it must be located in the direction that the sun sets.

                Point one
For the first point you need not look any further than the legends themselves. A natural disaster that could happen on an island would be something like a volcano eruption or an earthquake... In your report you said something about a rock in Rano Raraku consisting of what seemed to be materials found at the base of a volcano. There was also a volcano on Hiva so maybe that's the connection. Perhaps there was a great eruption?

                Point two
For the second point you can since Hiva was close to Hawaiki, both the people of Hiva and the people of Hawaiki migrated. If there was a volcano eruption or earthquake then the entire archipelago would be affected. Perhaps the people of Hawaiki went west to Aotearoa and the people of Hiva went east to Rapa Nui.

                Point three
The third point is also just as the legends say. Also, the statues you found in Ahu Akivi were all pointing in the direction that the sun sets... However, depending on the season the direction in which the sun sets slightly changes. Even if you move directly in the direction that the sun sets you most likely will not find what you're looking for... This doesn't seem like it'll be easy.

                Town official's conjecture
If you look at these three factors that should narrow things down a bit. Does that help any at all? Hmm, that's true... I didn't single out any particular area in my predictions. But, you're the one that has to go out there and get the proof required to make your decision right? I look forward to your findings!

                Gisele's impressions
So it looked like you were having fun talking to the Town Official back there... You should have called me over to join you! Hmm, so a seer saw the island in a dream and then made his way there, and there are statues of the emissaries and the king on the island? Wait a second... What about a statue of the seer? Don't you think it wouldn't be fair if he didn't have one too? You should make one for him!

                A staff?
You can't make one...? Hmm, I wonder if they didn't do anything at all to commemorate him? He's a seer so...maybe a staff or something? I mean, the seer was only able to make it to the island because he saw it in a dream right? He's the one who did the most work, so there must be something! Hehe, I'm pretty smart, eh?

In order to prove the legend
The Town Official's prediction was very convincing. However, without any proof it's nothing more than just that... a prediction. I think the prediction about the seer's staff is a very European idea, but it isn't necessarily a bad one. If I can find something that was made from wood not found on Rapa Nui and then determine where that wood is produced, or maybe...

This is a staff said to have been used by the philosopher Hau Maka who asked King Hotumatua to come to Rapa Nui. In a dream he saw himself flying towards the rising sun and learned of the beauty and bounty of the land he reached. He recommended to the king that he move there because it was land right for the king to rule.
