Make sure you have money on you to pay their wages.

Also keep their fatigue low, especially if you're using Frugality skill. Once that skill gets to about r8+ their loyalty loss will begin to slow

well lets see here. Several things make loyalty decrease.

no money to pay wages.
disasters. (the longer you let them go on, the more loyalty you lose)
losing a sea battle.
frugality. (some people will say it doesn't, but I have watched loyalty drop by using this)
extended sailing time. (I think this depends on total levels, but if you stay out for 100+ days it will become an issue)

hmmm.. disaster, not enough money to pay wages, not enough provisions, frugality (yes it does reduce loyalty and even ship speed), hmmm what else.. i think that covers it up all?
