Befriend them by buying them drinks and giving them gifts, perfume is the cheapest option but they will also take a lot of other equipment/items. stuff that you have almost used up (e.g Durability 2/30) is an idea.

I used to, but never got anything out of it so I dropped it at the same time I stopped giving the equivalent of a few hundred million ducats in items to the barmaids.

you doesnt have to have persuasion skill to get the gift. you only can get the gift from the barmaid from the 6 capital tavern n instanbul. i tried giving 3 taiwanese hairpin n i got the gift. :)

You're quite right. Though, some presents are worth more than others to barmaids; you can usually tell if they liked a gift by how much or how little they react to the gifts being given. I finished the present MA by using three or four Admiral Coats from Pisa for each barmaid.

I have noticed that as well. You can't just continue to give them junk from the item shop. I found that it's a good way to get rid of low durability items as well (amulets, jewelry, hairpins). Jade necklace with +1 sewing seems to be the most useful of all the gifts.
