Why is this giving me -13n on vertical sails??

There's certain formula for ship speed slowing down. I dont know the formula, but -6 doesnt mean it reduces -6 on both sails. Hope this helped ^^

So what does it mean exactly when an armor decreases your speed, in this case, by -6? Does it decrease from your actual sail count or is it more complicated?
twinster07-15-2016
Its percentage, to both vertical and horizontal sail value. The penalty is cumulative, eg. -6 x3 plates, total -18% penalty. Penalty applies only on the original sail values, so improvements from FS and extra studding sails and extra spankers/sprits are not included in calculation.

@twinster
What you say is a fact?
Can someone else check and confirm that statement?
Sorry if I don't belive what you said but I feel unbalanced status on those items, making any plates more disadvantageous than benefical to the player.
If that's the case, well, platins with -10 or above are useless, even more those which are unbalanced and takes more speed than the armour it gives, i.e: -15 / +13, meaning if you put 4 of these in your ship those plates make you lose 60% of your original speed to gain +52 armour, gaining 26% (aprox.) damage reduction, it's more a stat lose than a benefit.
If you say that the stat, in battle, is more benefical, you must need to remember that most of time you are sailing and not battling, unless you are grinding skill or lvling up.

I think your oversimplifying. Whether you want outside the ring speed vs armour values depends a lot on what your doing. For a trader/adventurer going place to place then yes, the speed loss likely is not worth the armour buff. But if your doing maritime, say ESF where your not sailing long distances but getting shot all the time than the armour benefit is worth a lot more than the speed loss.

armor makes a gigantic difference in the amount of damage you take per cannon hit. Something on the order of 10 points per armor point, so 33 armor can take as much as 330 damage off of each and every shot. As in everything else in this game, it depends on what you are doing. Armor can be useless or it can be crucial for success.
Curious07-16-2016
Does this speed decrease happen inside the battle ring too? Because that would mean most 100 armor ships should be super slow and most of the ones I have seen aren't...
Yaknow07-16-2016
Ah here's where the difference between in-battle and out-of-battle really kicks in. Remember that turning even a little bit slows you down, and you spend almost all of your time in battle turning. The game compensates for this by increasing your accelleration when you equip armor plates. That's why ships dont' appear to be slow in battle. Try this some time: be sure to have Battle Spectators turned on in your in-game display settings and have a friend go by you when you are in battle going full speed (your friend being out of battle) you will see how fast he's going compared to you and will be able to see that in battle you really are quite slow even though it doesn't feel like it.

@DPiano. No, its not a fact - since I don't have the exact formula from the game devs.. It's something I deduced through my own testing. I forgot to add that we should take the total -speed value and divide that by 2, to give us the total % speed loss. For example, 3x -6 = -18. Halve that and we get -9% penalty to vertical and horizontal sail value. The bit about penalty not applied to improvements from FS, studding sails, and spankers/sprits is true. This calculation is still not 100% accurate, I still get 1 or 2 points variance on the final sail value. But I'm happy with it, it's close enough. Maybe others can share their findings to give us a 100% accurate formula?
And as others here have pointed out, top speed and acceleration are two different things. Equipping armor plates reduces top speed, but increases acceleration. People should choose the armor plates that are suitable for what they're doing.
