Traces of human life
Thank you for the other day. I never thought that the child would have already taken leave of us. A valuable talent has been lost. I wonder what kind of life he lead. What were his thoughts when he sleep at night? I want to inquire in Antwerp about the boy's life.

Life with grandfather
The boy lived with his grandfather in a village not far from town ever since his parents died when he was very small. Although they were not rich, they lived happily, forever thankful for being alive.

That which grandfather bequeathed
The two lived a humble and happy life, but before long the grandfather died and the boy was left alone. his grandfather left behind a small amount of money so he could pursue his cherished dream of becoming an artist.

Grandfather's drawing
The child used the money left him to buy materials and painted a picture of his grandfather. He then left for the art competition in Amsterdam. If he won, the scholarship would enable him to learn the art of painting whilst receiving a stipend. He risked everything for this.

The artist was Rubens in Amsterdam. He had recognized the boy's talent and came to the village intending to offer him a scholarship from his own purse. Isn't it ironic. Of he had arrived a few days earlier, the child's life would have changed dramatically. Rubens was deeply shocked by the whole affair.

Inheritor
I saw that boy's painting some time after the competition. It makes one feel human warmth and tenderness and one can sense his appreciation of the old man. It was a trial from God. He was surely a talent that could continue on after me.
