Thanks to your discovery of Aotearoa, information has started to come in from that island. It seems that the people of that island have a culture distinct from that of other islands. It also seems that one of their specialties is dancing. I would thus like you to investigate any items related to this dance. Go directly to Wanganui.

So you're here to investigate our songs and our dancing? Well, the dance is called the haka. THere are various types, including those that impart tradition and those that give courage to men before battle. But the primary one is called the kapa haka. The town official can explain it better than I can.

The kapa haka, yes. That is the oldest of all the dances we dance, create when our ancestors still lived in Hawaiki. I can tell you the story behind that dance, if you like... so long as you have time. It is a bit long.

Our ancestor, Tinirau, kept a whale called TUtunui. His whale was killed by a man called Kae and eaten by him and his village. In order to capture Kae, tinirau sent many women out from his own village, to visit Kae's village...

But in order to capture him, they had to uncover which of the men Kae was. The only information they had was that he had crooked, overlapping teeth. If they lined up the people of village and inspected their teeth one by one, Kae would see what they were doing and flee. So...

The women gathered all the people in the village and performed for them. They pulled faces while singing and making wild gestures. ALl of the people watching laughed out loud, Kae among them. THey spotted his crooked teeth at once, and he was captured.

Now, the dance they performed to make him laugh was the kapa haka, passe down to today. But that was all very long ago, and now the kapa haka includes elements of giving fighting spirit to men before battle. Yet when women dance it, it is elegant and beautiful. Go on, try asking one of the girls in town about the kapa haka.

When we dance the kapa haka we use the strings with the beads on the end. We hold the other end of the string and spin them around as we dance. Only the upper class of women are allowed to use the longer strings, so I only have short ones, but do you want to take a look?

A girl in Wanganui has said she will show you a string with a bead on the end, used when dancing the kapa haka. It does sound quite intruiging. Use search and take a look at it.
