Book Detailing from Ancient Times to the Western Dynasty
I know of a very famous historical book. It starts from ancient times and is compiled in a simpe-to-understand manner from the time of Qin Shi Huang and the Chu-Han Contention to the Han Dynasty. The author is Sima Qian, who had incurred the emperor of his time and was imprisoned. His imprisonment was his impetus for starting his writing.

Will of Sima Qian
All we know is that he started his draft while in jail. After release he went to court as a Eunech and he apparently continued his writing there. Which means it took him more than 10 years to complete the historical work. If you'd like to read it there should be a copy in the archives of Hangzou. I'm sure the scholar would be willing to let you see it.

Historical Record of Sima Qian
Sima Qian incurred the anger of the Emperor and was imprisioned, but he apparently penned a historical book over the space of more than 10 years. He wrote a clear and concise record that covered ancient times up to the Early Han Dynasty.
