You've taken on a tough job, haven't ya...? The island down there at the southern tip is surrounded by strong winds all year round, not to mention that it's extremely cold. If you want to back out you better do so now. But, if you think you're up for it San Antonio is fairly close to the island. Find out what you can from there.
2. Island of fire
The name of that island comes from the Spanish word for "flame". Apparently Magellan was the one who named it. I wonder why he chose that name though? There aren't any volcanoes there, and it's not like it's covered in red trees or sand... You want to know don't you? Buy me a round and I'll let you in on the secret.
3. Fire that will never dim
Hey, thanks. All right, I'll tell you. There are people living on that island called the Yaghan. Even though it's freezing outside down there, they still walk around half-naked all the time! That's why they always keep a bonfire going to stay warm. They even have bonfires on their canoes. When Magellan saw that he decided to name it the island of flames.
4. People that came from the north
But, the Yaghan people of the Isla Grande Tierra del Fuego actually look exactly like the indigenous people further to the north as well. I'm talking about around Veracruz or even further north. That must mean that they migrated several times before reaching that island to the south. I have to wonder why they needed to migrate all the way down to that frigid island though...
5. Island at the limits
The island at the southernmost tip of the New World is named after the spanish word for "flame". Supposedly Magellan named the island that way after seeing how the indigenous Yaghan people there would use bonfires to keep warm. The island is surrounded by strong winds all the times. I need to be careful not to get blown off course when I go down there to conduct my survey of the island.
