대당서역기 1. Monk from one thousand years ago
Thank you for accepting the job. Nearly 1000 years ago a monk from the eastern country visited this land. You may be able to learn more about this if you look through some books at the library. If you can, I'd like for you to find some kind of items related to this monk for me...
2. Pilgrimage
The monk that visited here 1000 years ago? I do believe there are some records of that event around here somewhere. Also, that monk didn't just journey from the eastern country to India, he also went on a pilgrimage to many temples all around India. You should have a look on the "Theology" shelf, there should be something of interest to you there.
3. Seeking a true faith
The monk traveled from the eastern country through the Hexi Corridor to arrive in Gaochang. He was given a donation from the king of Gaochang and he continued on to the west down the Silk Rooad. He then reaches Magadha. In the eastern country the doctrine of vijnapti-matrata had spread all across the land, but had evolved into many different conflicting versions. Thus the monk traveled so far to learn and record the true doctrine...
4. Location of Magadha kingdom
Are you finished reading? There was something written in there about Magadha wasn't there? That country used to exist in the land around modern-day Calcutta. Perhaps you can learn more about this topic in Calcutta than you could here.
5. Comprehension of faith
That monk was a truly amazing person. At the time, his homeland did not permit anyone to leave the country. But, he broke that rule for sole purpose of coming here, and it even took him three whole years to make the journey! Then he spent five years at the temple here learning and studying about our religion.
6. Obtained the scripture and heading home
He then made a pilgrimage to many temple around the area and returned here. By that time he had learned enough to correctly teach other monks of what he had learned. He was considered a great monk even here in India. Now all that was left for him to do was to take back the sutras he had gathered here to his homeland and teach them the true ways of our religion.
7. Monk who returned home
Alas, no matter how virtuous a monk you may be you won't be able to make it home without the proper provisions for the journey. Luckily, Emperor Harja Vardhana, who had unified northern India, was heavily involved in relations with the eastern country. With the necessary provisions for the trip prepared the monk traveled back east via the Silk Road for his homeland. His long journey was finally over...
8. Huge scripture
The monk took back many sutras to his homeland, 657 to be exact. However, without being translated into the language of the eastern country they were completely useless. The monk spent many years translating these text and finally completed his task. He truly was amazing... Oh yeah, speaking of which... The temple here in town supposedly has some items related to this monk if you're interested.
9. Items of a monk from the east
Approximately 1000 years ago a lone monk journeyed to India. Using his unique talent and implacability he learned the teaching of vijnapti-matrata and brought back a large number of sutras to his homeland. Apparently there are some items related to that monk in the temple in Calcutta. I should go see what i can find.
