Father is currently in the field trying to prove whether the deductions we have made based on the data we have are possible from both a historical and a geographical point of view. Noe, what we would like you to do this time is to help substantiate a theory we have put forth based on a weapon from the Three Kingdom period.

Listen and Prepare to be Amazed
Numerous famous weapons appear in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Master Lu Bu's pike, Master Zhang Fei's snake spear, Master Guan Yu's Green Dragon. These weapons are thought to be fictional exaggerations. It is assumed they do not exist. But it strikes me that with the skills and techniques available at that time, it is possible they could have been made.

The Deductions of a Three Kingdoms Girl
In general, it has been thought that the weapons of the three kingdoms period, though swords, were closer to clubs. However, in times of war, it is possible that exceptional advances were made in weapons, tactics, metal technologies, and more. I told my mother that if they had the technology to work in well-tempered steel, they might have been able to make some those weapons!

Well, it is true that they could have produces some of those weapons if they had the ability to work in well-tempered steel. That technology involves strengthening the steel by pounding on it hundred of times. It is true that they were able to work with steel during that period. It is also true that we have records of weapons and tactics evolving during that time. For example...

Change in Tactics and Weapons
In Han period, they moved from tactics involving infantry to tactics for cavalry. This was possibly due to the fact that they were able to mass produce single edged blades. Double sided blades are good for thrusting, but with its wider blade, its not that good for cutting. That makes in impractical for horseback. Now to make lots of single sided swords, you have to have the ability to make strong thin steel.

It Could Have Been Made
In other words, it is possible that those weapons could have been made. Well, I'm sure they wouldn't have been as grand as the novel makes them out to be. However, whether those weapons were actually used by an officer is a different story. In particular, Shu officers... I do not believe that the weapons described in the novel for Guan Yu and Zhang Fei would actually have been used.

Geographical Considerations
Shu was a natural fortress. The footing was poor, making it poor for horses and for melee fighting. That was one of the reasons Ma Chao, who had gained a reputation among the horse riding tribes of the north, made such a poor showing while there. And they say that when Guan Yu was defending the Jing province he used a sword.

The Remaining Possibilities
But during their roving period, they may have used long handled weapons. I does say that they were depressed at how much flab had accumulated on their inner thighs. This indicates that they didn't ride horse for a while. It is likely that they stopped using such weapons around the battle at Chibi. I would think long handled weapons would be difficult to handle on board ships as well.

Where are the Hero's Weapon?
Though the weapons in the novel are fictional, the ability to make them may have been existed. If the Shu officers did change the weapons they used, it is likely to have been around the time of the battle at Chibi. Perhaps if I search the landing south of Hangzhou, I might find something.
