관찰 탐색 1. A place with meaning
Hmm,rock paintings... There are some all over this area. Some were drawn by our distant ancestors. Most of them just depict how we lived here and the spirits we are to worship. Any place with these rock paintings is considered sacred by us, so we don't really want anyone just recklessly going up to them...
2. Improvement of knowledge concerning rock paintings
At least try to find out what the spirits depicted in those rock paintings are and what particular tribe worships them. Becoming knowledgeable about those paintings will also help you should you be labelled by them as an intruder. Try asking around town for more information.
3. Spirit of the rain and clouds
What? Spirits? Have you heard of the Wandjina?
...Hmm, nit yet eh? Well, the Wandjina were cloud and rain spirits. They come up in the legends told by the people that live to the south-west from here. They seem different from the other spirits though. Want to know more?
4. Wonjina tribe
Just think of the Wandjina as the name of a tribe of spirits. For example, Walaganda, one of the Wondjina, went up into the heavens and became the Milky Way. The rock paintings of Wandjina all depict their heads with thick lines of red or yellow. You should easily be able to tell them apart. Just be careful of one thing...
5. If it had a mouth
Paintings of Wandjina have no mouths. That's because Wandjina were cloud and rain spirits. If the Wandjina have mouths it would rain forever without stopping, so don't go and draw a mouth on them just because you think it'd be funny or anything! You can look at the paintings, but no touching!
6. Rainbow serpent that created the world
Some of the spirits are ancestors of a certain tribe. Wherever those are painted is often considered that tribe's holy land. However, the story of the rainbow-coloured serpent that created this world is the same for all tribes. He is given different names from each of them, though. For example, Ungud, Yero or Julunggul.
7. Lighting elemental Namarrgon
Now let me tell you about a spirit named Namarrgon. He is depicted on a rock painting close to here and he is spirit of lighting. He has something that kind of looks like tentacle coming out of his head. This symbolizes lighting. He hits a special axe with his elbows or knees to cause lighting to strike
8. The terrifying Nabulwinjbulwinj
All right, I'll teach you something. There is a spirit named Nabulwinjbulwinj , but he really scary. He hits women over his head with big yam and then eats them! He has a fan-shaped head so if you see any paintings like that I would stay away from them, especially if you're a beautiful like myself!
9. Don't get them mixed up
So you're researching about spirits, eh? Oh, are you going to go see the rock paintings? I hate to break this to you but the rock paintings aren't only of spirits. Our lifestyle is depicted in those paintings too, so there are plenty of drawings of animals and people as well. I hope you can figure out what you're looking at because if you can't, the spirits might get mad at you!
10. Records of elementals and men
On the continent south-east of Jakarta there are rock paintings that have been left behind depicting the way the indigenous people there live and representations of the spirits they worship. Apparently they can be found all over the continent very important places to the indigenous people. I should search carefully around the land to the south-west, taking care not to damage any of their sacred sites.
