You're referring to Charles the Great of the Carolingian dynasty. Charles the Great was crowned Roman emperor by Pope Leo III. However, western Rome did not agree, as territories of western Rome are different compared to today. I believe it has its advantages and disadvantages. On Christmas day in the year 800 AD, Charles was crowned Roman emperor. In doing so, the pope was able to exert his power over eastern Rome. Although Charles the Great himself ruled from Aachen in inland Amsterdam, his crown was recently moved to a church in Bordeaux.
