If I remember correctly, you get a few clues in amsterdam (check at barkeep, heh) then, you head to newfoundland coast where you get last 2 or 3 clues by clicking on landmarks. Then you just use ecological research near some tree in newfoundland north coast.

I seem to recall it was also required for the landmark clicking segments which lead to the actual discovery. As to the older question, there is no special reward beyond Quest Mediation Permit(s) on completion.
