1. Gaining favour with "Bread"
Going from a Republic to an Empire, Rome carved expanded her territory and the food supply and lifestyle became rich. The nobility and the Emperor offered free fod to the people and became popular. This is the "Bread" from "Bread and Circus".

2. From "bread" to "circuses"
However, the people became dissatified with only the bountufil "Bread". Thus the rulers came to offer the "Circus". Among those, the circus that excited the people the most wasthe sword fighting contests. Thinking about it now, it was horrendous thing that would make you want to turn your eyes away.

5. Preparation for a serious battle
In particular. the fighting competitions were a serious fight where the swordfighters' lives were on the line. The preparations were flawless and it was reproduced in the forests of Africa and the ocean. Thinking about it now, it wasan incredible stage setting. 6. Thumb that indicates death
Cheers! That serious fight was a fight to the death, upon which the curtains would hang. That decision was up to the people. If the losing swordfighter fought a valiant battle, then they would give a thumbs up. If it was not fought with heart, the thumb would be turned down. If the thumbs were turned down, the Emperor would order the death.

7. Place of self expression
Well, you see, to the Romans, it was the one place they could show their ideas where even the Emperor couldn't interfere. You can imagina how lively it must have been. The most famous Coliseum was in Rome. but Bombei had one as well. Maybe you mind find something usefull there.

8. Bread and circuses
The Roman citizens were so fond of the Circus because it offered a stage where they could put there lives on the line and was even a place they could express themselves freely. There was also a Coliseum at Bombei apparently. We shall have to go investigate.
