Apparently there is a person revered as the god of academics in the island nation north of the Spice Islands. The scholar in town is eager to study about this individual. It's probably hard for a scholar to cross the seas all on his own, so please lend him a hand. Go talk to the scholar to find out more details.

The Figure of the Scholar's Aspirations
I want to know just how talented this man was, this man who was "so deeply knowledgeable of academics, that he was revered as a god"... I will keep my sights on such a remarkable person all of my life. Would you investigate in Sakai about his character and way of living? I'm sure a scholar there would know something.

His name is Sugawara no Michizane
The man revered as the god of academics is likely Sugawara no Michizane. He was said to be blessed with a talent for studies, and highly entrusted with important titles by the Emperor of his time. Now years after his death he may be revered as a god, but it seems he suffered much in his life. Please read more in my library.

                Confidence of the Emperor
The official, Sugawara no Michizane, gained the trust of the emperor, and earned promotion after promotion. Finally he rose to the rank of Minister of the Right, and tireless performed the works of government. But naturally, there were those who resented him for that. This resentment was embodied by the emperor's minister of the left, Fujiwara no Tokihira...

                Downfall through Slander
Tokihira plotted the downfall of Sugawara, who was his political rival. In short, he falsely accused Sugawara of plotting to "overthrow the emperor in support of his son-of-law". Sugawara thus received the Emperor's wrath, and was demoted to a position in Dazaifu, far to the west. He was never to return to the capital, and it was there in Dazaifu where he ended his misfortuned days.

                Lamented loss
Though Sugawara suffered after his demotion, it appears he left behind many poems and writings. It's truly unfortunate that such a talent would pass away without being able to better devote his energies to politics and academia. You should also talk to the official in town. I'm sure they will tell you the same thing.

                Rumour of a curse
Sugawara no Michizane was a great politician, but there was a terrifying rumour that began after he died. After Sugawara's death there were many disasters in the capital, and the people were terrified it was a curse. So in an attempt to appease Sugawara's spirit, built shrines called "tenman-gu" in the capital and Dazaifu. Dazaifu is to the east of Nagasaki. Try gathering some information in Nagasaki.

                Michizane's love for Plums
Back then Sugawara was so feared. So now he's treated almost like a god, and many people visit his shrine. There are plum trees planted there, which were Sugawara's favourite, and visitors during the spring are greeted with fresh scent of plum blossoms. I should go pay my respects, too.

                Location of Mausoleum
In life, Sugawara no Michizane was a great politician, but he saw a tragic end as he was stripped of his position through the plot of his rival. He was once feared as an angry god, but now he is gaining followers as a god of academics. His shrine can be found north-northeast from the outskirts of Nagasaki. Head out to investigate and pay your respects.

A shrine dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane.
Sugawara was once believed to have brought a curse upon the imperial family for their treatment of him before he died. To alleviate that curse many such shrine's were built. Sugawara is now revered as the patron god of academia.
