                  Yuki's plan
Thank you for coming! I really want to learn how to dance. If I can dance well, I'm sure our guests here will enjoy it. And then I'll get paid even more... Sorry, never mind that. That's not what I want to ask you.

                  The dance of Men
I asked our customers what kind of dance I should learn. They gave me a lot of suggestions, but only one of them stood out. Shirabyoushi was what they said it was called. Apparently, women dressed up as men and danced and sang. I think it was something like Akuni's kabuki dancing which is really popular in Kyoto and Edo.

                  Investigating Shirabyoushi
Shirabyoushi is a bit different from kabuki though. It used the old dances. So I figure it is different enough that it might just be popular. So, I was hoping you could find out what kind of person danced and what kind of dances there were... Maybe the scholar knows something.

                  Archives on Shirabyoushi
Miss Yuki is interested in Shirabyoushi? I'll bet she heard that Akuni was getting rich with her Kabuki dancing. Sorry, just ignore my mumbling. We actually were just asked to store a document on Shirabyoushi from Edo. Please take a look. I believe it is on the Treasure shelf.

The dance and dancers of Shirabyoushi
Shirabyoushi refers to a dance done in male dress that originate from the ceremonial dances. It also refers to the dancers themselves. It was most frequently danced by women and children, but there were some male dancers, as well. It began as far back as the Heian period, and over time is said to have influenced Sarugaku and Noh.

                  Giou and Hotokegozen
Some of the Shirabyoushi had the favor of certain powerful men. During the period of the clash between the Minamoto and Taira families, Kiyomori Taira is said to have showed favor to 2 shirabyoushi. They're names were Giou and Hotokegozen. Giou had been a favorite of Kiyomori until he later switched his favor to the young Hotokegozen.

                  The fate of the Shirabyoushi
After losing Kiyomori's favor, Giou returned home. However, she was occasionally called on to dance for Hotokegozen. Unable to bear the shame, she becomes a nun. Later, Hotokegozen also joins that monastery. Fearing the uncertainty of their patronage, other dancers also began to leave the dance.

                  Nailing Yuki
It seems that Yuki is thinking of using dance to make some extra money. But no matter how good the dance is, she won't get what she wants the most. In fact, the more she is liked, the more she will be led astray by the moods of others. That's what this story teaches us. You know, it might be worth it to talk to the owner of this book in Edo.

                  The shadow behind the dance
I received that book from an acquaintance of mine, a dancer. Her patron had dismissed her, so she decided to quit dancing. She gave the book and her costume to me and entered a convent. She was a fine dancer. She was especially skilled with dancing as a male. I think she was even familiar with the old Shirabyoushi dances. Reminds one of the tales of Giou.

The Dance and Costumes of Beauty
In investigating shirabyoushi, I was told tales, both old and new, that tell of both its beauty and its dangers. According to the servant at the Date house, no one else would take it so the costume is stored at their mansion in Edo. After seeing it, I will make my report, then pick it up and go and tell the tales to the one that needs to here them most.
