Where the Whelp is Heard
An invisible dog…? Now that you bring it up, I do hear stories like that every one and a while--like someone hearing a dog bark from somewhere, almost as if it came from overhead. But none of those people ever saw a dog. The source of these stories are from folks who travel near the castle outside of Tamsui. I bet Mei-Juan has heard some stories too.

A Tree-climbing Dog?
Yeah, I heard about it from one of my customers. They said they heard it when they "were resting on a rock", I believe...
When they heard it they thought a dog must have climbed up in to a tree! But are there dogs that climb up to trees? Maybe a scholar would know.

Maybe Not a Dog
If a dog climbed up into a tree it might leave a trace behind, like some claw marks, perhaps. But I think it would be quite a feat for a dog to climb up onto a tree branch, even for a very small one.... Could there be another animal that makes barking sounds like a dog...? That's my hypothesis.... I'd suggest you first go to the location the Tavern Keeper mentioned.

At Last Discovered?
The upper parts of the tree trunks in this area are being stripped of their bark, little by little. They are likely being inhabited by something… During your examination, you hear a "WOOF" overhead! Looking closely, you see the face of a small creature peering out from the shadow of a branch...
It doesn't look like a dog...

Truth about the Whelp
It appears you've tracked down the identity of the invisible dog. As there are no dogs in the area, this creature hidden in the tree branches must be the source of the barking. The small animal is staring in your direction. Carefully complete your study so it doesn't run away.

  Squirrel dispersed widely across all of Asia with a chirp that sounds like a dog bark. Its front teeth are sharp, and they sharpen them on trees, which are often stripped of their bark.
  It is rough-natured, and acts alone after infancy.
