A scholar researching Mayan idols has a job for you: Apparently, Mayan statues are often adorned with snakes, and to aid his research, he would like one of these statues collected as a reference. Merida would be the place to inquire about Mayan gods.

1. Snake and time
There are many snake statues in Maya. That's because the snake shedding its skin is the same as the passing of time. There are ruins of the ancient civilization in the outskirts of this town. Perhaps you can find something interesting there?
2. Statue of a snake
There are many snake statues in Maya, because the snake shedding its skin resembles the passing of time. This is easy to see, since the Mayans held time to a great importance. I should visit the ruins outside of Merida for a good chance of find statues. Once I get the area south-west of Merida, I should search around the pointy rock to the north.

A snake statue, commonly seen in Maya. It is probably a rattlesnake. Rattlesnakes extend their joints each time they shed their skin and for this reason were respected by the Mayans who also respected the passage of time.
