The Stone of Jacob was a rock that Jacob used as a pillow while he was in flight from his brother Esau. He sleep on a stone in a field and had a dream in which God appeared and promised him a long line of descendants. The name Bethel was derived from 'Beth Elohim', which means 'House of God' in Hebrew. Afterwards, Jacob met God again once more in Bethel and it was declared his name would become 'Israel',which means who fights alongside God. He was then known as Israel from thereafter. Following this, he built an altar there and established Bethel as a holy site.

But i get the feeling that the story was fabricated so that its owner could legitimise their power
