What this effect actually do? What is "special goods"?

I sent a ticket to PapayaPlay asking them about this effect, and they in turn contacted KOEI to find out. The official answer is: "When you put on the equipment item with this effect, the chance of "Great Success" during Production will increase."

it does not work when production, it only works searching.

That's what I expected too. It's possible KOEI got their answer wrong somehow? But there was also this wiki:

It should be more like "Special Goods Production Rate Up". It doesn't actually increase GS rate per se, but your more likely to produce an item with better stats, quite similar to the oxford skill Item Improvement Techniques. I don't know if it works differently on the Asian servers, but thats how it is for us on Maris...

I tested this using the Cannon (18) recipe in Manchester. Made 104 Cannon (18)'s without using the Ancient Priest's Knowledge Book, and 133 while using it. Full details are available at: ssjoy.org/dho/free/3155528 (need to translate).

Not sure if the test results are statistically significant given the small sample size. However, assuming they are (would appreciate if anyone savvy with statistics can verify), here are my observations:

- This skill does not appear to boost overall GS % -- GS % was about the same whether I used the Ancient Priest's Knowledge Book or not (40% without book vs. 42% with).

- This skill appears to (slightly) improve the average quality of GS items.
It does so by:

(1) Decreasing the % of obtaining the worst-quality GS item (e.g., Master's Cannon (18) with 1656 penetration); and

(2) Increasing the % of obtaining a slightly better (e.g., next worst-quality) GS item (e.g., Master's Cannon (18) with 1674 or 1692 penetration).

In my test, the % of Master's Cannon (18) with 1656 penetration went down from 33% (without book) to 17.5% (with book). Conversely, the % of Master's Cannon (18) with better penetration (1674 or 1692) went up from 16.5% (without book) to 31.5% (with book).

It did not appear to improve the % of obtaining the best-quality GS items (e.g., Master's Cannon (18) with 1728+ penetration). I suspect that this may have to do with the rank of this skill/effect (R4 currently), but this needs to be tested in the future.
