I don't know a lot about shipbuilding, but it's my understanding that all ships, at least all non-astro ships, are considered "Generic" ships until they are graded. The grade title is determined by what grade bonus you add to it, I think anyway.

no, ships have specific ship types even at G0. Patrol Corvette, is f.e., an Expedition Ship

If your concerned about the ship "type" in terms of high speed battle ship vs battle ship be aware that you can change the type of any ship to whatever you want it to be based on what kind on sacrifice ships you use during fusion. This is covered in several of the good fusion guides in the OGP forums.
