How do you know what skill can be applied to what ship? Is there a site or a list somewhere? Can't you add any skill to any ship with and original ship building permit?

there are 2 kind of ship skills, original ship skill(can be added in ANY ship, requires original ship permit) and optional ship skill(unique for EACH ship, can't be added elsewhere) i.e. you can only add attack prevention net skill on vaiss/arm vaiss/refit heavy carrack (look above) optional skill requires improvement through special shipbuilding improvement permit (NC item)

This site lists what optional skills are available on all ships, except NC Custom or Modified ships- these can be fitted with the same optional skills their standard counterparts can=Modified Armored Vaisseau can be fitted the same optional skills as Armored Vaisseau etc, only 2 optional skills can be fitted on any ship.

Thank you Batt, I guess another question now is do I have to use a dismantle to get a new original skill, or can i just put a new one on my ship and have it overwrite the old one?

I haven't tried it to confirm it, but I've asked several people, and they say you can just overwrite the Original Ship Skill. Optional Ship Skills are different, though.

yeah you can overwrite original skills, just go SY and select 'build original ship' and select another original skill to add, you'll get a notice message asking you to confirm to replace the current original skill.
