Maybe you can decide on its effectiveness after understanding melee attack/defense calculations:

Melee Attack =(sailors/2) + (sterncastle*5) + (maritimeLv/2) + (swordplay*3) + (equipment.atk/4) + ((forte-2)/10) - ((fatigue+5-Y)/10) [Y is still unknown]

Melee Defense = (sailors/4) + (maritimeLv/2) + (firstaide*3) + (equipment.def/3) + ((loyalty-1)/10)

Let's say I'm in my CLR with a Large Sterncastle and Large Corvus equipped (for ease of engaging in melee and higher melee power). Melee attack = (sailors/2) = 117 + (sterncastle x 5) = 30 + (maritime lvl / 2) = 25 + (swordplay x3) = 42 + (equipment atk/ 4) = 35 + (sailor's ability -2/10) = 10 + (fatigue + 5 - Y/ 10) = ??? (let's say 0).

So, I should be somewhere around 259. Now, by halving the sterncastle value from this skill, I'd drop by 15 to 244. 259 to 244. Doesn't seem like such a big bonus to me using a Special Sterncastle. I'd much rather have the 30% bonus to defense from the Attack Prevention Net... especially since, in a CLR, I might not even use a sterncastle and go with two corvuses and abordage.

Just my 2 cents.

when im in melle with CLR my MFCV have this skills ... my friend who
use MAV that doesnt have this skills they said that guy melle is
420 attack and 200+++ defence
but when i melle that guy it become 370 and 200++ defence
that is the different that we can see

its lovely you lot talking about CLR and MAV MFCV. but what about the people who for any reason cant afford / dont own the big NC ships.

how useful is this on standard ship against the likes of CLR MFCV

I think a vaissaue with attack prev net and hasc/lc have a good chance, but you need high/maxed melee skills too.
Dont torget that many with maxed skills use NC ships, it is a advantage

if the enemy ship doesnt have stern equipped for sure you will have +50% boost in attack :)

Yup, special sterncastle is overrated.
Or maybe it's not rated well and FCV-type users are only choosing this skill for the extra dura and armour its FS parts provide.

Compare AFCV improved gunport vs special sterncastle (most common options). The one with special sterncastle should end up with 5 more armour assuming they are both using the best build possible - max dura max sails 3-4 dgaffs for more than enough turn and 2 dstorms for more than enough wave, then all else goes to armour.

So yes improved gunport is one of the best skill available in game but to choose that over special sterncastle you have to miss out on 5 points of armour.

Well AFCV and AV are good because they have IGP right? If you use SpStern then you might as well use a much cheaper FCFV.

This skill has at least two functions that I can confirm:

1) Halving the effectiveness of the sterncastle of your opponent. Let's say he has melee tactic 1 + 2 and 2x heavily armour stern castles, then this means it goes from 14 melee battle support to 7 which is about 35 attack reduction and including the oxford makes it total about 40-45 attack.
2) Interesting thing is that when both you and your opponent got this skill, it is completily negated. This means that this skill also protects your sterncastles from being less effective from opponent's special stern castle.
