Your items on melee will fail by chance, e.g. withdawal bells, pillage orders, smoke bombs, loud bombs, etc

to prevent your crew stealing put your aide in storekeeper job but most effective is keeping their loyalty up try either: elena's rosary, vintage of covenant, or simply stop being a tight git and buy your crew a drink at every port...

Since nobody's bothered to answer AbsolutWoman's question in almost a year, I'll go ahead and say that it does not work in Deck or Land battle. Of course, Elroyy did answer the question prior, so I don't really understand the confusion.
