To grind this, like all melee sklls, you need to spam it in melee.

The thing is, however, that you had better have a low melee attack and high defense to grind it so that the enemy sailors do not die too fast (and yours do not die either). You want the melee to last as many rounds as possible. (I also heard that the enemy npcs will not try to retreat if they have more sailors than you, but I cannot confirm.)

The plus side of this skill is that it consumes the least Vigour from all the melee skills. It causes less kills to your own crew unless it is countered by gunfire.

This skill isn't useless at all for two reasons:
1) For temporary increase of defence power, the attack power temporary decrease at the same time. I've noticed that it causes less kill to the enemey's crew. This is often useful when your teammates are still busy to kill other enemy ships.
2) When this skill counters Assault then it acts like Assault itself while your defence power temporary increase. This makes Assault of the enemy ineffective and may temporary reduce their defence power by a small amount.
