George, it's true, but pretty much pointless. There are plenty of gear that increase formality way over what is needed for speaking to nobles.

Other than that there are some for certain jobs. I think the Adventure Mentor requires these at r5. that's all i know. :)

For merchant, its main purpose is to level up accounts, which lvls when you haggle with success. If you have soc 5, try getting the +3 robe from ancona, the +3 silk shawl and a +2 crown...stack with college skill to get high sociability and watch accounts and profits soar.

Any estimate how many billions one would need to invest-grind this up from r9 all the way to r15?
Juicebox09-18-2017
Ok let me break it down. Yes this skill increases the rate of successful haggles but your capped at only 2 successful haggles per trade. Which I get quite often even with Rank 0 sociability due to me trading in my nation's ports. Well what if you dont want to deal in your nation ports? Well why would you? you get a 20% Tax if you dont so you better damn well trade in your nation ports. R10 Accounts and R10 social is MORE than enough in your own nation ports.
In addition theres tons of CHEAP easy boosters no need to rank to R15 especially with no Refine skills for doing so. IMO the REAL skill you should want is nation correspondence skills on your aide you know the one that increases your friendship with other nation that actually boost the profit you receive from all trades with a nation so raise your own nation correspondence get that money Tax free! Accounts can be refined as well to increase profits 10% when selling and stack with fortune maker title so that should be the one you raise.
Nation Correspondence, Accounts Refine, Fortune Maker title, Sociability through boosters...Simple! :D

Thanks for all this, but it doesn't address my actual question. Maybe I have too many billions or I am bored or I am weird or (can think of other silly reasons). It's a legit question surely.
Egw09-18-2017
Oh and btw, you aren't capped at 2 successful haggles. You are capped at 20% buying/selling price reduction/increase. This may come at 2 or 3 haggles, depending on your accounts rank. I see the difference pretty clearly when accounts is favoured and/or boosted vs. when it's neither.

Don't forget you can get proficiency points from reporting adventure discoveries to NPCs, too. I'm sure that would help with the sociability grind.
For pure merchants though, hmm. I've always wondered: does the amount you invest affect the number of skill points for sociability? If not, you could just do the least amount. If so, well! That'd certainly help, especially for those with too many billions at their disposal.
Blake.C09-18-2017
You get 9 prof skill points on Sociability for each investment, regardless of the amount. So a 100 mil investment earns no more then a 60k investment. :x
For reporting discoveries, you get 3 prof skill points regardless of the value of it. Again, a 5 star discovery earns no more then a 1 star discovery. Not sure if reporting to the wrong NPC or in a non-adventure type job effects anything.
But like CPC said, there's really no reason to get this all the way to R15 since you cant refine it, and there's a TON of booster equipment for Sociability. The amount you have invested in a port also has a determination effect weather a haggle succeeds or not which kinda makes a very high ranking Sociability moot if your going to be buying and selling in ports YOU have invested in most of the time...

CPC, refined Accounts skill has an effect:
Enables advantageous haggling (only lowering price) at the Market.
So it works only for buying trade goods, not for selling (at least it was so in 2016)

For R10+ with 2x boost at least I get 4 proficiency per investment regardless the amount. But the minimum should be 150k or more. Each rank you go up, double check it if you gain or not.
I made an equation about how much money you need for this grind:
> The proficiency required from R9 to R15 is 81.000.
> Let's assume you pay 150.000 ducats per investment approx.
> we take the X value as the amount of Socialbility proficiency you gain per investment.
> we take the Y value as the amount of ducats you need to pay for efficience socialbility grind to R15 from R9.
Y = (81.000/X) * 150.000
So if it is still the case to get 4 proficience per investment you get:
81.000/4 = 20.250 * 150.000 = 3.037.500.000 D (3.038b round up) you need then ^^
Please keep in mind this is still estimated as you can't invest always the same amount at one port at some point. Proficiency rate may also be changed, but you can still use this equation to calculate it.
Hope this helps :B
