Consider this, a large (and I mean LARGE) part of the most profitable trade goods that come out of East Asia are Sundries.
The most efficient money spinner there ever was are paper lanterns. 60k sale in atlantic ocean areas, no need to run all the way back to Europe. Sure it's useless otherwise :)

I said this somewhere else, might bear repeating.
A _LOT_ of "useless" skills are going to get a major re-evaluation once this server finally catches up with the other two servers. skills, aide skills, ship skills, ships, items, all of it.
It'll be like a lightbulb comes on for all of us... "oh so THAT'S what that is for"
Well not all of us, hopefully most of us anyway.

keep in mind that east asian trade isn't traditional trade, from what i have read you will not buy goods but trade other goods for them

Yes you need to trade european goods to EA ports in order to get "nanban trade points" those points you can exchange for EA goods on that port, the exchange rate is based on your trade skills for the said good and ship skill nanban trade helps too. Trading is gonna have a big refit and trading skills gonna raise in importance.

No wonder I've never understood those nanbanana trade things, I've never been anywhere past Sofala, Africa, and Caribean. Most (if not all) equipment for casting is in Europe anyway.

If you want to grind it the traditional way, the *only* thing you can buy is western books, in Lisbon or Amsterdam.

...I don't know if repeated nanban exchanges, in which you acquire EA sundries, could be used to improve this in any efficient way at all (seems unlikely to me but I'm no nanban expert).

A few more unlisted Sundries trading boost items:
Star Sapphire Hair Dressing -- +2 accessory; sold in Istanbul's item shop, but investment (and thus being a member of the Ottoman Empire) is required.
Lace Brim -- +1 female-only headgear; produced at Manchester or an Industrial Revolution City's Loom.
Western Bonnet -- +1 female only headgear. There's actually two versions of this; one is a possible weekly reward for Large Gold Nugget mining (valued at 14,000 points nugget points) and gives +1 Metal trading as well, while the second is only +1 Sundries trading and is produced through a sewing book given for completing the North American Pioneer Clothes MA.
Kichka -- +1 female-only headgear; produced with R11 Sewing in St. Petersburg with Embroidery thread x15 and Felt x30 via "Street Daughter" NPC near the bank (does not seem to be Chrono-specific).
There are some other items, but they don't seem to be in GAMA yet. Cheers, all.

Traveler's Comb is another +2 accessory, and probably much easier to obtain for most.

There are many guides out there which advise how to grind this skill. Here's a link to one of the best ones out there:
