How do you get this skill?

Good question.

You must change your job to one of the jobs listed above as having this skill as specialized or preferential. You may not learn Linguistics without changing your job, as there is no NPC who teaches the said skill.

Dont think so but you can make things that will let you. PITA part is the 30000 adventure fame needed.

With this skill, dont need body language, just make the dictionary of the language

thats just an ignorant uninformed comment. you really think somebody is going to carry the mats around all the time to make a dictionary to speak wherever they go? body language is an essential skill and can not effectively be replaced by linguistics

and their are only 4 jobs you can get that have the skill
cant buy it anywhere... its job specific so try playing the game without the language or bodylanguage until you get one of these jobs...

silly comments... i have this skill and it is only good for archive browsing when u need to "READ" archives where body language will never help u and translation notes u buy from the interpreter are very few.
usually all recipes have paper and some other trade goods (mostly dyes that are locally in the same area they speak the language u r trying to make the dictionary for). Usually paper is easy to make/get around the world if u buy ramie, collect hemp and more...
it serves me well when i do serious adventuring thats all

Once you make language dictionaries do you read them once to learn a language or do you have to keep each dictionary in your inventory? If the latter it would seem this takes up more space than a single Body Language skill, and you can get Aides for Archives you don't have the language skill for.

Pretty sure the dictionaries are an item that sits in your inventory like translation notes (tho they have effect, meaning dictionaries won't lose dura until you use them)

you mean... it's like any ordinary piece i never need, until i break it up?
ThatOneGuy02-27-2015
Eh, so... when grinding this skill, which method gives better prof, making dictionaries, or translation notes? I've got recipe books for dictionaries, but if notes are better...

Just as a small note, a Japanese wiki confirms this skill's highest possible rank is 10, or 10+1 with Interpreter job.

Why don't put chinese at level 11 and japanese and arctic language at level 12
Nekos04-24-2015
Make translations is faster and you can sell them to the interpreter.
If you do dictionaries you have to drop them everytime you do 3 or 4, because occupied space at the inventory

About a year from now, whenever chapter 1 from the "Age of Revolution" update is released, it looks like this skill will finally allow players to make Chinese/Japanese translation notes.
Source: gvo.gamedb.info/wiki/?Update/IndustrialRevolution -- namely, listed under Factory production (printing press) according to Google Translate
Chinese/Thai-Burmese notes: R5
C/T-B Dictionary: R8
Korean/Japanese notes: R7
K/J Dictionary: R10
There will be other requirements I don't fully understand yet, mainly to do with that whole industrial revolution angle... but hey. Now we know.
