sailing around using ship which has ship skill (emergency accel, etc) level up also works for ship with workshop/galley etc even if it's need management skill

Other than being a pre-requisite for ship skills what does this do? Hidden performance increase in speed, turn? Increase rate of Ship Handling Performance gain?

i can confirm what Lancelot said (2012-01-19) - it does not matter whichever skill it is, aslong as the ship got at least 1 skill, you will be granted Navigation Profiency upon arriving in a port :)

best way is go to Ushuaia (supply port), if you using most vertical sail ship, sail to west from Ushuaia, if you using most Horizontal ship, sail to east from Ushuaia and port at Hobart, then from Hobart to Ushuaia again, and repeat. from hobart, for most vertical sail, take west and for most horizontal sail ship, take east to Ushuaia

Man it's so easy to rank I doubt you need to do it intentionally... Just sail around and you'd notice it maxing out before you realize.

Shirin mean, if you need to rank up the navigation quickly to use the ship skill such as Emergency Acceleration. Many players excited to use that skill and the fast way to rank up navigation is sailing far distance

@Erda, sorry that is not true. I sailed from seville to ambon non stop and it barely gave 100 points but navigation short distances (i.e: ports between europe: seville casablanca, seville lisbon, etc) it gave me 50 exp fast. Sailing short distances is the fastest way to rank up this skill.

u have to have a ship with a skill what use's Navigation skill on that ship so it lvls up then u can go on the sea and go to a far town then it lvls up faster

any..i repeat..ANY ship skill will work if you want to grind this skill...

after getting ANY ship skill...go sail out and whenever you dock..you get navigation skill prof...

Yes, NAV skill ranks up everytime you sail. the farther the better so it doesn't matter if you have or not have the ship skill.

As stated above by Cornelia: navigation will gain proficiency and rise in ranks as long as you are sailing in a ship with ANY skill built into it. I reached r2 Nav while using a Sambuk with a Management-only skill.

It will get to max rather fast, but you will find it slow if you think to buy it *after* you get your ship with EA.

Better to get it ASAP, even if your ship doesn't need it, as some point you will want it.

It's actually kinda pointless to have it favoured in Great Adventurer job since I'm sure everybody would have maxed it out to R10 by the time they get their adventure level high enough to get that job...

Unless, of course, plans exist for future ship skills or the like which we know nothing about... yet. Alternatively, maybe it's just to keep things balanced; Arms and Management are favored by their respective high-end jobs, after all. It'd be a little odd if Navigation weren't, despite how easily it can be leveled.

Of late, I have seen a new accessory called 'North America Survey Team Voyage Record' for sale in bazaars. It requires 5000 fame to equip, gives a skill boost of +1 Navigation and Provisions, but most importantly of all, it has an Item Effect of Search, meaning it cannot deteriorate at sea. I believe it to come from shipwrecks, most likely those in the vicinity of West North America, or the Northwest Passage, based on the item's name.

On another note, when Atlantis concludes and chapter 1 of the Age of Revolution update comes, the three ship skills (Navigation, Management, Arms) will have their max level cap raised to R15. New ship skills and recipes taking advantage of this will also begin to be introduced.

Skill cap for this has been raised to R15 now. While it serves little, if any, purpose for now its usefulness will shine in the next major update, Age of Revolution where their will be new (as Guilder pointed out) ship skills and recipes taking advantage of this.
