The two level "discount" is already factored into the level requirements for the quest. In fact, you will have the same difficulty opening locks/disarming traps when you just meet the quest requirement. Except for high level quest that tend to be traps, this is usually never an issue.

I have level 6 unlock but it wouldn't let me unlock a lvl 7 quest chest. Did something change since last update? I used to be able to unlock 2 ranks above my lvl.

I don't have any grind route walkthroughs for it but maybe some of this will help..

Salvaging shipwrecks will get you up to around r8 in decent time if you're doing it all day, assuming you're lower level unlock.

Archive maps are probably the best way to go, get a couple of unlock boosters, easy to get +2 to your base skill now days and get as many maps you can fit in your inventory and go bust them off. The higher the map above your skill the better, of course. And remember you can do maps that are 2 above your skill level, so if you're r6+2 you can do r10 unlock maps, just takes a few more tries to unlock them. Make sure you're turning in the map discoveries so you can get the same maps again. Check ivyros listing of archive maps to figure out what archives are best to search for maps that suit your level and what maps are best to search company shops for.

And of course have a job that favours unlock to cut in half how many skill points you need. Thief job will also add +1 to it as do some aides if you're really wanting to rank it fast.

So overall, combine salvaging with unlock quests and archive maps and try to always be unlocking above your base level with a job favouring the unlock skill.

Unless you have 156799754366888654 ship wreck maps, I really recommend doing random quests with unlock at it (usually it would be archaeo & treasure app) and just freely do it to your will. Don't get tol worked up on it as it will frutrate you. Also do it alongside with maps.
Aside from the art-venice-naples grind, I find the one at carrib to be a fun one as you gain lots of fame and qmps too! Basically go to carrib and visit all the scholars, get all possible maps that should take you beyond vera cruz.
Be aware that you'll need high rank of unlock and archaeo/theo with it.
Another way is the shipwreck map geography version. A lot of them will require unlock skill, enabling you to grind on them.
Just grind it normally and enjoy adventures ;)

here is the list of tips(from above + mine)

1.dungeon chest give a bit unlock prof when it say 'avoid trap through unlock skill'..

2.to farm map...yer need someone else beside ya in order to farm it..it's like A got the map and then give to B..then A can get the map again..but please do turn the discovery if yer want to get the map again(this only apply to discovery map..not treasure map[dat dont discover thing])
and..you can use unlock less than 2 rank(like r8 map,require r6 with several try)

3.shipwreck raising..would give tons of unlock prof...and even yer with someone dat raise/explore the wreck..

4.Quest...require the exact or more unlock rank as quest require..

5.some college skill do help on gaining skill prof..which is

both stack...

6.getting job that favour unlock half the skill prof max(and the gain is the same whether is the favour or not)..

- You need Art r8 and you can use +boost items. Ex Art r6 + 2
- Use the college skills "Research knowledge 1 and 2" for xtra prof.
- You need an alt (who doesnt have this days :-)) to pass the map
otherwise it wont show up if its in your inventory/vault/quarters. One alt can carry a max of 50+16 = 66 maps.
- You need about 35 headache meds to fillup one alt

I did this during the last event x1.2 which became x2 and later x3. From r4 unlock and search I reached r16 search and r15 unlock and max r16 Art. Gained 8 adv levels and reach 100k adv fame within 3-5 days (4hrs playing time a day). Takes 1 min to search in naples church and submit discovery to the mansion just below the church map then just repeat the process.

if u r of a lower lvl. you can repeat the above process for the amesterdam art map which requires you to go hamburgh church. when unlock is lvl 3, you can go get the art map at london (holy vassel or smth like that) which is search at bordu church. do the london art till r6 and u can move on to the venice one. (r5 if u change to thief job since it +1 to unlock)

I'm pretty sure the answer is no, but I thought I would ask in case someone knows better... is there a college skill that provides +1 for Unlock? I know Research Knowledge 1 & 2 skill give more prof points, but I couldn't find a college skill that gives a level boost.

Purely for Unlock grind.
So far I have found the easiest r10 unlock map to farm is in Athens:
Theology - Ancient Text map of India - Discovery outskirts of Calicut.
with r8+4 Search, r7 Unlock (+1 @ discovery, r7+5 Theology
I farmed 67 maps with just 20 headache meds.

(note - no Religious legacy noble in Calicut to report to = no QMP)

Unlock items are hard enough to come by. Please list the GOLDEN CLIP as a +1 Unlock Accessory.. It seems to be the most common unlock item floating around these days aswell.

no, it is not a Florentine recipe- it is an item called "globe of adventurer" and it will drop in Abu Simble lower, Lima middle and also in chest from Colosseum. It will be available when Grand Atlas arrives.

After several days of focusing on this skill, I was able to grind to R12. I am curious what the cummunity thinks about grinding Unlock to R15. It seems unnecessary if a player has boosters. I can't think of a game reason to drive to max level, other than satisfaction. What are your thoughts?

Well, if you can get it to R15 and refine the skill, the bonus for refining it is extra trade goods from chests when doing dungeons. Otherwise, if your not a dungeon runner, It's not recommend to refine. Nor is it really necessary to grind it all the way R15 except maybe to free up inventory slots for other booster equipment.

Hmmm, looks like we will be able to produce boots with unlock+1 and trap+1, if I understand Japanese wiki correctly.
Recipe should be available in Omaha on August 20-23.
One will need 20 Leather + 5 Leather Cord + 5 Embroidery Thread
Also rank 10 Handicrafts will be needed.

As the recipe is not so hard, the price of boots should be also low.

Actually, it looks like the recipe Donce mentioned is available now as part of the Thanksgiving event taking place in North American towns now (Boston, Omaha, Sacramento, San Francisco). The boots recipe is as listed, and can be found with the Traveller in Omaha by the train. Oh, and it's an MA item as well... cheers.
