It's a waste of a skill slot. It doesn't reduce the amount of damage rats do on trade goods, nor does it reduce the rate of rats occurring (skill is permanently stuck on R1). Seaweed doesn't happen too often either.

Never let anyone convince you a skill is a waste of a slot. Decide for yourself. For those who explore the Amazon this skill is invaluable. Also the island area near the heel of Italy is full of algae. Failing to remove it can lead to a damaged rudder. So, you either have to carry spare rudders and something else that removes algae and rats (3 inventory slots) or just Eradication (1 skill slot). Let each decide for him/herself.

There are of course other ways of dealing with the misfortunes mentioned above. An aide with good rank in Navigation can remove seaweed pretty quickly and a good rank in Storekeeper can remove rats quickly as well. If your rudder does become damaged, there's a college skill for that, besides the item. General Check

But as Almeida says, you should definitely decide for yourself which is the best way to go.
