It seems I'm getting 5 max of anything with only Field activities 2 on. It'd suggest those don't accumulate, like supposedly the ship speed thing does.

Field activities definitely can work together, especially noticed when fishing, where there is no cap of 5.

No cap of 5 would be a little OP, but sure would make collection gear useful again...*sigh*

Oh, it might indeed just be a cap then, for collection / procurement, doing that. Too bad, but I still think they're fun as hell.

It caps at 5 on land, so if you have r10 collection or better there is no reason to have field activities I going at same time as field activities II. Fishing is entirely different, no cap. r20 fishing plus field I and II is a lotta dam fish in short order. (makes arapaima almost bearable)

Depends on what you are collecting. Goods that require high collection skill level can still benefit from both Field Activities, especially if - without oxford - collecting 1 or 2 the good is the most common.

Anywhere honestly. Use oxford skills "field activities I" and "field activities II", sidle up to your favourite landmark and start collecting. You are collecting for a reason right? Rare to see somebody using collection for collection's sake. Go wherever the items you need are collected and just let collection take care of itself.

What Theo said, and Collection ranks up slowly and costs vigour food in the process, my suggestion is to get a booster like the Turk bracelet and collect in areas others than europe waters. If you are not collecting with a purpose, then just figure out what sells best either to player or NPC.

sometimes ranking collection seems to do more harm then good. for example at newfoundland many go to collect white ore. but you also get Rocks, Logs, Boulders, & Cranberries.
i remember when i was low collection level i didn't get any cranberries (which takes rank 6or8 or thereabouts), at one point i stopped using boosters to keep my level low so i wouldn't get the cranberries.
There are various places where this effect comes into play, not just cranberries.
getting +3 to this skill requires just some fairly cheap equips, and +5 seems like it would run you maybe 100mil for gear.
so before you worry about ranking collection, make sure you really want to. LOL
remember college skill, and aide set to lookout. and you will get 5 of each good anyway.
personally, i have r15 collection, and am considering dropping the skill and relearning, no more cranberries for me !!!

Yep, I do agree, you may want to think a bit, before ranking this skill, samely as procurement (berries berries berries:).
Then again, once I did, I'm trying to at least exploit the advantages of it, such as gathering the high-end stuffs. It can be fun too, and the adv ranks up mad (even few K daily, before you get tired).

When I truly care for receiving things like stones or hemp, I'm trying locations further from the landmarks, usually works.
Generally of course it's best hitting the landing points / outskirts with least stuffs we don't need, but it's not always possible.

cranberries are freaking awesome _if_ you have cooking. Get the recipe for making cranberry juice and it is impossible to run out of vig when you are collecting out there.

What's the best place to get colored ore (any but black) in or near EA?

I dont think theres any land areas in EA where you can collect colored ore, but there are in SE asia and nearby areas:

Southeast Brunei has Blue and Yellow ore.
Northwest Malacca has Red and Yellow ore.
West Wanganui in Oceania has Blue and Red ore.
The best spot, however, is East Ceylon which all the colored ores (except black). The downside is the port around Caylon is frequently patrolled by player pirates, so use exetreme caution if you plan on going there.
