1 reason pirates and martimers use this skill is it will allow you not need food or water meaning more timber and cannonballs. If you ever PvP you may see that allot of the time the winner is the guy that don’t run out of timber. A deap sea pirate (not port sitter pirate) with survival, fishing, frugality, Procurement can stay at sea almost forever on very little supplies despite their large crew and low cargo.

I'm currently lvling this using a BTC with 35 crew, with no food and water aboard, and with Ocean Explorer job. I gain about 4 prof points per sailing day though it doesn't kick in until around 6th day. You don't need to be actually sailing to gain points so you can port sit if you want. Be prepared though to loss a lot of crew from munity and fighting as it will happen quite a lot. Your really need to have Leadership skill if you plan to grind Survival.

How many days at sea you need to be to start getting skill exp depends on your skill rank the higher your rank the more days you got to be at sea b4 it starts getting skill points. You (cannot rank this skill while sleeping) although you don’t need to be moving to get skill exp if you go afk your crew will mutiny get plague or otherwise die and leave you sunk once your fatigue is maxed which will happen fast your crew will die quickly

When you get survival r20 you become Bear Grylls.
Everyday without water & food, you win 5 points

As a combination class player focusing in maritime, i am just now picking up Survival even though i already have Frugality rank9. REASON: provisions on battleships fill the cargo. Running without food and water effectively adds 5% - 25% extra Speedup bonus, depending on sea zone.

This skill should also reduce damage from ice floes
Snipe09-09-2015
The skill rank x 5+1 formula applies to base rank only, not with any boosts.
For example, if i have r2 +3 survival
I will get prof on the 11th day onwards
If i have r5 +0 survival
I will get prof on the 26th day onwards
briker12-31-2015
it has auto effect whereas frugality is active

Grinding survival while in a storm will net you really good proficiency. Just found this out actually. I put my sails down and waited out the storm for 2 days. Each day I earned 29 skill proficiency.
BonnyLass03-02-2017
Let's see if I understand all of this correctly.
This skill only gets proficiency points if there is a severe storm or blizzard, and you're at sea in it. It will gain points if you sail without food and water, but only while actually moving, and only after a certain number of days at sea, based on rank. As a side effect, this skill can sometimes trigger and prevent status ailments like plague or scurvy.
Does that about cover it? Anything I've missed? And is there really a new +2 item from a Memorial Album? Thank you in advance!
Snipe03-02-2017
To end the debate once and for all you do not have to be sailing to actually gain proficiency points, tried and tested.
Just sitting outside port works :)

If you want to squeeze good the survival skill the best job is salvager. You have the sail handling, the surveying, rescue and repair ,just in case a storm. I normally go the the 7.000 line , at south, where there is no land, all sea. When you "die" because you dont have more crew use rescue and, even that, the survival skill still working. Dont use the aide ship because you will need more money. You still need dishes to keep sailing.

Is this a fleet bonus or just own ship?
Guilder10-24-2017
Only affects your own ship, as I recall.

Does it need to be at a certain level to start preventing scurvy or is it only an increase of probability the higher you go?
Marfisa10-09-2023
For what I'm seeing it just increases the probability to prevent scurvy, but for me it started to do it after r4, so maybe there's a minimum level requirement

If i sail 35 days with food & water and THEN throw all the food & water away, i start earning xp on this skill at the day 36 or i need to sail without supplyes from the start?
Marfisa10-19-2023
Nono, you can throw the food after you passed the first days. It's actually a good idea doing so to reduce possible problems before starting to get the xp

The progress of getting skill prof won't be reset when anchoring at landing zones, so you don't need to worry about loosing it if you need to anchor there. :)
