I'm not sure yet wheter it will need a certain rank or just r1 --although I recon that it'll be r1 or something-- but yes you can use survey later on at LZ or outskirts.
Later updates that is ;) hopefully EA

Surveying in landing points and outskirts is one of the best improvements in the game! I like it very much!

Wen zhi WTF?
02-21-2014
Is it me... I see no benefit to leveling this skill... Does anyone see a benefit at all to leveling this skill?
Its the same at r1 as r15 right?

The area shown in the little surveying map increases... so you know you are approaching land earlier... maybe the duration too, not sure.

It just lasts longer as you have an higher rank... Map size doesnt increase.

I have to insist it does :-). Try it out with a +1 booster, put booster on, use surveying, turn surveying off, take booster off, turn surveying on again, notice the difference.
Snipe10-09-2014
It does not increase map size, confirmed. I sat outside a dock and tried it with my rank 10 surveying, then switched to a
Quadrant which is rank 1. I alternated it a bunch of times, map size stayed the same
Me10-09-2014
While the size of the Survey map on the lower right of the screen never does change, the viewed area you can see does increase as your Survey rank increases, like zooming out on Google Maps. Also, if you are say r4 Surveying and are fleeted to someone with r10 Surveying, you get the effect of having r10 on your Survey map(you see the same Survey map as the r10 character).
Snipe10-09-2014
hmmmmm im not saying you are wrong but im pretty sure map size stays the same for from rank 1 to rank 10......
Guilder10-09-2014
Just a thought: screenshots of Survey map at different skill ranks?
Snipe10-09-2014
Ok, so i gave Guilder's idea a try:
I took two screenshots, one using rank 10 surveying, another using a
Quadrant. Then, I placed both screenshots in an empty folder and opened them using windows photo viewer, before rapidly clicking the "next picture" button. The results? map size stayed the same.
Guilder's idea made me think of another way to find out: I opened both in photoshop, then combined both screenshots into one picture, setting one screenshot to 50% opacity. The maps of the two screenshot exactly overlap each other.
I can probably say that map size does not increase :P
Battousai10-09-2014
The duration is 90 seconds + rank*10.
H.-Gazi12-02-2014
***Summary Information***
It will open a extra map interface while sailing on sea or exploring a land. Size will be ALWAYS same regardless which rank you got like Snipe Said. Battousai is also right, it prolongs the duration of the Surveying effect.
Advantages:
> You don't get lost while sailing/exploring, even if your compas becomes useless.
> Coördinates at seas, which makes determinating locations way accurate.
> When you do quest/maps a star will appear on your map, after using observe/map (you need to get close enough, before the star appears).
> Very useful for those, who uses GVONavi. You can steer in which direction you want to sail in long range and also check your shipspeed in kt.
Important note for GVOnavi users with a alt:
When you're using surveying on both while sailing and also far away each other, then your GVOnavi becomes messy when switching from screens and your kt will show huge numbers.

This skill can actually be used in the Labyrinth dungeon. It will display a map of your current floor's layout, even noting the exit's location (if you pass close enough to it, of course). As large and twisting as the Labyrinth can be, this is very handy.
But because your combat action gauge is affected by loss of vigour (always fight in land/deck battles with max vig if possible), I would suggest that any Labyrinth fleet Admiral consider taking an item like the Quadrant (sold for cheap in many craft shops) or a Sextant (less easy to acquire, but more durability uses) along to use as the effects of both mimic Surveying skill.
Oh. And four days from now, there will be one other dungeon in UWO where the Surveying skill can be used... heh. Cheers, and great online voyaging, all.
OK-Roland12-08-2016
Acropolis,right?
Guilder12-08-2016
Yep, the new labyrinth-styled dungeon at the Acropolis was indeed the place I was hinting at.

I learned this skill can be refined one day, and have been trying to find a good way to rank it up to R15. Here are the three methods I've found work best!
#1: Use it when at sea.
If you sail a lot to adventure or Nanban, this is easy. On the downside you need to be sure to keep money on hand and equipment will lose dura at sea, so you can't just camp outside a port to do it.
#2: Use it in land zones.
If you have Marching skill, this is a very easy way to do Surveying grind, and you can level them up together. But you need to reset your fatigue often because if it hits 100, you will "pass out" and lose money/some items. Storage rank reduces the losses, but it isn't quite perfect...
I think there's a third way but somebody told me it didn't work for them so I will research it further. And before I forget, here's the refine effect!
"When practicing surveying, expanding the detection range, using observation skills or treasure maps, the range in which discovered objects can be detected increases. --Azusa ? 2023-09-24 (Sun) 07:34:03"
I got the info from here.
gvo.gamedb.info/wiki/?Update/230919update
But of course, the best way to gain prof on Surveying.. is to use it, preferably while it's favored. Good luck, Survey grinders. :)
