One interesting thing to note that this is the only obtainable pet on Maris that has the Area Caution skill, which can decrease the likelihood of NPCs launching an assault on you while at sea.

True, but the point is still valid as the Magpie you can acquire from questing whereas the Sealion pet was a briefly available UWC item only available from players.

area caution can be used instead of caution or high lookout ship skill?

Yes, it can take the place of both skills you named and will prevent invisible NPCs from attacking, as well as reducing the chance of being ambushed by visible NPCs to a certain degree.

(Careful: this includes Formidable Enemies from Battle Report quests. You must store your pet before doing BR quests; de-equip them at a trainer and place them in a bank vault slot to prevent theft/loss of trust then re-equip the pet again later, or if you have used Expert Pet Breeder Certificate item, place your pet in your quarters via Port Official/Guides.)

Actually there's another solution that I found when doing battle reports. If you mentor a low level fleet member before you sail out, the skill deboosts from the mentor still apply even if they're still in port. Since this pet's caution skill needs R10 pet training, this can take the skill low enough to disble the skill without having to unequip the pet, enjoy. :)

Very good trick, thanks for sharing. My only warning then would be to be mindful of the mentor deboost affecting your battle skills / storage skill, depending on how you do BR. Good solution though, thanks again. Cheers.
